Does Virginia have a chance at winning a state championship?

I think they have a chance at winning it cause of there solid goaltending and they have 4 lines that can score against anyone. its gonna be even harder cause one of virginia's defensive men broke his wrist wit 1:00 left in the game and is having surgery on today.

I have a hard time beliveing they have 4 lines at all. Most class A squads only roll 2 lines most of the game

Not from what I've seen. STA, SCC, Warroad, Little Falls could be the top 4 seeds.

I think the Blue Devils have a nice team but not enough to win the whole thing

They have a better chance then about 60 other schools.

Win on Wednesday and anything can happen.
The first one will be tough because they will get STA, Warroad, Little Falls or St Cloud Cathedral.

They have 4 lines and the 4th line has 18 goals which very good for any fourth line

Virginia does play four lines from start to finish, game in, game out. This team has become very strong as the season progressed and is as deep, if not deeper than any team in the state. They have a very good shot at winning in St. Paul.

I posted this in an earlier thread about Virginia and their depth. This is their line combinations (I updated the goal totals):
Virginia:
1-Westin(31), Hendrickson(22), A Judnick(14) - 67 goals
2-Norlander(9), Carlson(7), Buccanero(5) - 21 goals
3-G Nichols(4), Chesser(8), Andrews(3) - 15 goals
4-T Nichols(6), Eddy(9), Howard(3) - 18 goals
D-Krebsbach(17), W Judnick(3), Belobaba(3), Grivette(3), Dahl(1) - 27 goals

Virginia also has two other players with three goals each that are not on the current roster. (Lundberg and Nelson)
TOTAL: 154 goals

As you can see, no Virginia forward has less than three goals and only one defenseman has less than three (Dahl). There is very little scoring difference between lines 2-4 and none are deemed defensive liabilities. All 17 skaters on the rosters are very good skaters and play and contribute on a regular basis.
In fact, it was Virginia's FOURTH line that scored the game winner in the third period against Duluth Marshall in the 7A semifinals.

This team started the season 2-3 and are now 23-5, including 12 wins in a row. Their only loss after Christmas was a 4-2 loss to Hibbing in Hibbing in a penalty-fest. (They have since outscored Hibbing 10-2 in two games.)
Since a 5-1 loss to Hermantown on Dec. 23rd, they are 18-1. Any team who thinks they are a good draw in St. Paul will be in for a surprise.

No, they will not win state. They may be able to get a first round upset, but even that is pushing it. I just posted on another topic about strength of schedule. Virginia may be content with their record, and judgement based on who they played. But who they played is the problem. They are going to get an eye-opener, when they go down with teams like St. Thomas, Little Falls, St. Cloud Cathedral, Warroad etc. The only top ten teams Virginia played all year was Hermantown, and Little Falls, both of which beat them.

Not trying to discredit the success of Virginia. But the other state teams are in a different league then them. And that's not to say that Virginia will be the worst team at state. But they will be in the bottom 2-3 teams.

PuckRanger, points don't tell the whole story. If they played a harder schedule, their points would naturally be lower. For example, Westin has more points then Max Tardy. But does that make him a better player? No. Westin isn't half the player Tardy is.

And please, don't anybody think I am just bitter about Virgina advancing. No team in class 7A would have had much of a chance at state (including Marshall).

I doubt anyone thinks any team aside from whoever comes out of 3A is a "good draw," but Virginia probably still wouldn't be predicted to win.

Belobaba is done for the season with a broken wrist and had surgery on it today

I have to be a Virginia fan, now.

Duluth Marshall
14-10-1
Had 6 easy games, that would make them 8-10-1 without those games.

Virginia
20-5-0
10 easy games.
10-5-0

Rankings, strength of schedule...
They mean nothing.

What counts is winning and winning at the end of the year.
Virginia is winning, they can win the state.
Not the favorite, but the opposition better be ready.

elliott, you took my post the wrong way. It wasn't met to say that Virginia will lose because it played a weak schedule. I am saying that Virginia will lose because they haven't seen the really good teams in the state, and don't know what it is like to play really good teams (this is mostly a statement to the people on this forum who think they are great).

Also, just because you play good teams doesn't mean you are good. But I am saying for those who point out staggering point totals, a good record and their depth, they haven't seen other teams in the state. Because with all do respect, I could find 5-7 A teams that would have played Virginia's schedule better then they did. And yeah, Westin has 70 points. But does that mean that Virginia will go to the state championship? No. Because I could put Westin in a schedule where he would get less then 30. And again, this isn't Marshall vs Virginia. It's Virginia, and what they will do. I am not tearing apart Virginia. They are a good team, not a top 5 team though.

If yes, then you have to believe Virginia has a chance.

Westin is very good hockey player and virginia only lost to little falls 1-0, and they are playing twice as good as when they played little falls. They could beat Hermantown too.

It all comes down who is the toughest competitor and who has the most heart to win it all. Anyone can upset anyone no matter what their record. Virginia has the best fourth line in the state in single A. so that says something about how much of a competitor that team is and will be at the state tournament.

Virginia will represent section 7a very well with either 3rd place or state chapmionship this year

Go DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Little falls is a good team but i dont think they have what it takes to win state because all you hear about is hanowski. Who else is on that team?

This team's schedule is difficult but not overly so....
they played one AA school, not a bad team but pretty much middle fo the road.
But not a whole lot different than Virginia, but a lot of people give them a good chance to win it all.

If Virginia keeps improving each game like they have been since the beginning of Feb. they will be a challenge for any team at State. They forecheck hard and each line knows how to swarm the net. It cannot go unappreciated that all 4 lines can score. How many other teams in Class A can say that?

for the record, I HATE VIRGINIA. but they are a good team. they have been rolling as of late and i'm sure they can compete with any A team in the state. they definately have a chance of winning it (i would love to see them lose 2 games 10-0 though)
