There has been much talk about the private schools recent dominance in years, and accusations of recruiting. This seems to be the first year in a while, that the private schools (collectively) have taken a hit for returning to state.

Fallen perennial's

*St. Thomas Academy (ends 4 consecutive state tournament run, 2 1st places, 1 3rd place, 1 4th place)
*Duluth Marshall (ends 4 consecutive state tournament run, 3 2nd places, 1 3rd place)
*Blake (ends 3 consecutive state tournament run)
*Benilde-St.Margaret (ends 1 year consecutive at state, 3rd place)

Marshall and STA are the two big falls, since the two have essentially dominated A hockey the last 4-5 years. However, it seemed inevitable that Marshall would lose this year, and STA losing wasn't completely a ridiculous statement.

However, the privates are not falling so quick
Additions this year
Rochester Lourdes
Breck

So this year, 3/8 single a teams with be private...down from 4/8 last year
And, 1/7 AA teams will be private** (1 game still left)...(2/8 last year)

Seems like less of a strangehold this year for the privates. It really is good to see some new teams there this year.

So there is 1 less private school at state, possibly two? I wouldn't really call that slipping. There are just different private schools in state that you are not used to seeing.

My point is that there really are no really strong favorites for private schools. Yeah, Lourdes entered, and Hill-Murray might enter, but do they really have much of a chance?

I'm not neccessarly aganist the private schools. It's just a thought.

Just wait. Next year, the Privates will be back. It is just like the northern teams. The past few years the really have not had a lot of talented teams. But I guarantee they will come back. Like elliot70 said, everything goes in cycles.

You got three of them in the state tournement, and Cretin-DH and Hill Murray in the Metro tournement, slip??? possibly, not really though. It is interesting how Hill and Cretin aren't seeded. Breck and Cathedral are seeded in the state tournement though, were the private schools have really taken a foothold. Doing the math, there is ONE less private school playing in the X in March.

I don't think the Private schools are slipping, I just think the communities are sick of losing to them. The only problem with privates is the fact that they lose alot more players to USHL or USNDTP. However I see this year ending with two Public State Champions.

37.5% of class A is still private, so we are missing good old marshall and STA....thats still pretty impressive, but 62.5% of the teams being private schools would have really made a statement i guess....Cathedral doesn't recruit, they just offer a superior academic experience compared to the public schools in st. cloud. not sure about lourdes...as for breck, that school is just for rich kids whoes parents want to ship them off to boarding school and not see them for a few years isn't it? haha

Why not worry so much if the teams are public or private and reward the teams with some professionalism and good sportsmanship? Let's just have a great tournament. Congratulations to all 16 teams, wherever you come from.

Actually, Breck is a very diverse school with kids from all sorts of backgrounds. Not just "rich kids" as more than 30% recieve some sort of financial aid. And no there are NO school athletic scholarships. Great education, great athletics. Go Mustangs and good luck to all!

I'm not pointing fingers or saying names, but I would guess if your a block-head at a public school, and transferred to a {superior academic private school}, you'd still be a block-head.

This makes 8 of the last 11 Class A championships won by private schools. I don't think this is what the small school ADs & coaches had it mind when they pushed for a two class tournament. Congratulations to Breck & Coach Les Larson. A great team.

St Thomas misses the tourney and there's still complaining. There's no private school in the AA final and the one that made it to the A final was the #4 seed. Stop complaining they're there and just beat them.

Yea let them recruit kids from all over the city, and play in Class A. Privates
belong in their own State Tourney.
