Classic Lake Conference
(All returning counted players are from rosters according to MSHSL)
1. Minnetonka- Returning 1 Goalie, 10 Forwards, 5 Defenseman. Graduated only 4 players. This team will only improve on last year’s performance. Returning a solid goaltender in Kruger, all 5 Defenseman from last year’s team, and a dangerous Gardiner and co. at forward make them my favorite to win the Classic Lake next year and I hope with the new sections that come out this week they get split from Eden Prairie.
2. Edina- Returning 2 Goalies, 7 Forwards, 4 Defenseman. Obviously they lost a lot of very good players. Don’t let that fool you, the Hornets will still be a very talented bunch and compete for the conference title with players like Everson, Taft, VonVoorhis, and Sit. Ankeny will probably be improved with the goalie coach they have as well.
3. Wayzata- Returning 1 Goalie, 8 Forwards, 3 Defenseman. 4 out of top 7 point production back from their forwards I think gives the returners a chance to step up and be those top guys without a problem. Top 2 from D are also back, but they lost their starting goalie. They have a lot of young talent that could step in next year as well and even with having a new goalie I think this team will be alright.
4. Hopkins- Returning 1 Goalie, 6 Forwards, 3 Defenseman. Another team bringing back good goaltending in this conference. They will have one of the most dangerous goal scorers in the conference in Boyd, also will have Skalbeck back who had 48 pts. They lost 5 senior defenseman though and the returners will need to step up and in their place to play with the others.
5. Armstrong- Returning 1 Goalie, 11 Forwards, 4 Defenseman. Only 4 players graduated from last year’s team. Bad news, it was the top 2 point production players at 30 pts. Each and also their starting goalie. Maybe they turn some heads with some quality non-conference wins but I don’t think they steal a conference win.
I was a little torn with Hopkins and Wayzata I think Hopkins can compete for the 3rd spot in this conference but with unproven Defenseman I went with Wayzata ahead of them. Minnetonka will be a force next year for anyone in the state and Edina will remain a very competitive team. Armstrong will have some good improvement I think as well, should be a good year in the Classic Lake for it's last one.
EDIT: Everything is based on as if everyone is staying for next year. Will edit if things change.
