SANDELIN SIGNS TWO-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION
Scott Sandelin, who coached the University of Minnesota Duluth to the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff championship and to the
NCAA West Regional finals, has signed a two-year extension that will
keep him behind the Bulldog bench through the 2011-12 season it was
announced today by UMD Athletic Director Bob Nielson.
In his nine seasons at UMD, Sandelin has racked up an overall record of
144-173-45, including a 22-13-8 mark this past season when the Bulldogs
became the first club to ever go 3-0-0 in the 17-year existence of the
WCHA Final Five and advanced to the title game of the NCAA West
Regional. UMD finished the year holding down the No. 8 spot in both the
uscho.com/CBS College Sports and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls.
The recipient of the 2003-04 Spencer Penrose Award (American Hockey
Coaches Association NCAA I Coach of the Year), Sandelin has produced
one Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winner in Junior Lessard (2003-04),
three All-Americans, 13 All-WCHA selections and 57 WCHA All-Academic
Team honorees during his UMD tenure. In addition, six of his players
have gone on to skate in the National Hockey League.
Sandelin, who will turn 45 on August 8, has directed the Bulldogs to a
pair of NCAA playoff appearances, one NCAA Frozen Four berth (2003-04)
and four of the past seven WCHA Final Five tournaments.
Blais has joined a great program, that in a year will be playing with the Dogs in the WCHA. UNO and BSU are confirmed as the two teams joining for the 2010-2011 season. Besides, with Dean Blais lost to the Dark Side....errr....a CCHA team, we might as well keep Sandy, eh?
