UMD off-season Thread

Post Bulldog news here throughout the summer if you're interested.

I'll start by mentioning that four Bulldogs have signed pro deals since the end of the season.

Senior MacGregor Sharp signed with Anaheim and is playing in the AHL.
Senior Andrew Carroll signed with Charlotte of the ECHL.
Senior Matt Greer signed with Syracuse of the AHL.
Sophomore Evan Oberg signed with Vancouver and is playing in the AHL.

So far, only 1 person has left early from this year's team. I'd say that there are only two other players that could jump early to the pros - Alex Stalock and Justin Fontaine. I don't know if Stalock would sign with San Jose since they're deep at tendy, but his rights might be traded. As for Fontaine, he had a great year so who really knows.

Groundbreaking for the new DECC Arena is the middle of this month, so that's something all Duluth hockey fans can look forward to. Lee, do you know the exact date?

Good afternoon -

Any ideas what the Bulldog recruiting class will look like?
Tomorrow 4/8/2009 - Starts the late signing peroid for players to sign their Letter of Intent (LOI).

Any other recruiting rumblings that pertain to UMD?

I'm not sure exactly who will be coming in, but if I've heard...

Forward -

Mike Seidel
Max Tardy
Keegan Flaherty
Jake Hendrickson
Dan DeLisle

Defense -

Drew Olson
Wade Bergman
Dylan Olsen

Bold are the players I think will for sure be coming in, italics are the players I think could use a year of juniors, but still might sign on.

09/10 Recruiting Class

Lucia4President-

I think you are right on in terms of guessing what the class will look like. The three 'D' for sure will be coming in with the loss of Meyers, Casicalenda, and Oberg.

I actually checked out DeLisle at the Great 8 tourney in S St Paul this past weekend...and to be honest, he was not too impressive. With him already committed maybe he didn't play up to his potential but, I am just not thrilled with anyone to come straight from HS to the WCHA. Time will tell. I would like to have Tardy and DeLisle play a year in the USHL and develop a little more before arriving on campus.

**I still don't think it is too late to add another F or two this late in the game. Walk-on types or small % scholly's that are Jr hockey vets.

That is my opinion.
Let me know if you see any press release or article that tells who UMD signed for next year. Something official. I do likewise.

Are Luke McManus and Jon O Neil still committed?

Mulefarm -

As far as I know, I believe they are both "committed" to UMD. If anyone who has really struggled, it is O'Neill. I saw him last night vs Owatonna in the NAHL playoffs and he played only 3-4 shifts the whole game on the 4th line. Not good. So if anyone is not heading up to Duluth...my money would be on O'Neill. He just isn't developing at this pt. Maybe the coaching staff will give him until next fall to show improvement :?: :?:

McManus I believe is more safe. He plays on a loaded Indiana Ice team. He may have to go back and play next year but, he is in USHL and that is good thing.

FYI...I did talk to the communication director for UMD athletics...he mentioned to me that UMD won't release a press statement of the official signees until next week. He needs to talk to the coaches about all the LOI (Letter of Intents) and make sure who is coming and who is not coming.
So we will know more next week most likely.

Later!

As I understand it, ground breaking is set for next Monday, April 13. I can see the site from my office window :) and today they've knocked down a large snowbank which was alongside 5th Ave W, probably hoping the sun would melt it down this weekend. Some equipment has been moved in alongside the Auditorium, two trailers and a couple satellite toilets have appeared. I also noticed (no idea how long it's been there) they've constructed a chain link fence on the avenue adjacent to the construction site. Looks like they're ready to start!

Meanwhile, work on the new parking ramp is progressing quickly.

Hard to imagine that tUMD will be playing in a new home in just over 20 months! Let's hope that the work goes as planned.

That's upsetting, but I'm sure everyone on here that follows high school hockey knows how great Brady Hjelle is in goal.

Best of luck to Alex, he is a great goalie.

Ground-breaking ceremony this morning, could see a group of about 30-40 people down at the DECC parking lot. Last night they said the grand opening would be on 12/30/10.

UMD has announced the official list of incoming recruits for next year.

Jake Hendrickson, Mike Seidel, Dylan Olsen, Drew Olson, Dan DeLisle, Keegan Flaherty, and Wade Bergman.

Seidel and Olsen are the two top incoming players for UMD. Seidel had 73 points in 59 games for Cedar Rapids this season. Olsen is projected to be a 2nd round pick in the upcoming NHL draft.
