Peewee A Spring Lake Park Panther Classic 11/20-11/22

Fogerty Arena finds itself holding a peewee A tournament for the second weekend in a row as Spring Lake Park is hosting their Pre-Thanksgiving classic for the second year in a row and has drawn a relatively balanced field for a standard eight team bracketed play down.
While the games will be competitive the highlight of the tournament just may very well be the skills competition. Where one skater from each team competes in each skill category and the top competitor in each category is given an award for the Fastest Skater, Fastest shot, Best Shot, and Top Goalie.
Quarterfinal pairings are:
Mahtomedi vs North Metro
The Pirates come in as the lone D3 entrant in this tourney looking for their first victory of the season, while Mahtomedi comes in from D2 with a winning record in some close games. Look for a close game to open up late in favor of Mahtomedi.
Cottage Grove vs Spring Lake Park
Cottage Grove rolls into this tournament reeling a little bit, they opened up district play with three consecutive losses, being outscored 18-3 in the process. They are a larger team that clogs things up, if they stay composed and their top line gets going they could make a run here. Spring Lake Park on the other hand is in year two of fielding a team at the peewee A level, and while they have not played many games to get a good read on they showed to be a slow starter last year and it appears to be the case again this year. They will compete hard, but Cottage Grove will come out on top in this one.
Chisago Lakes vs Sibley
Chisago Lakes brings a little momentum into their first round game, coming in off of three consecutive victories and holding a winning record and already defeating North Metro. They face a Sibley team that looks to be off to a rough start in D8 league play. Momentum carries through here as Chisago runs its win streak to 4.
Armstrong vs Hermantown
Probably the best match-up of the first round and toughest to call, Hermantown travels down to the cities after getting a visit from Woodbury and Rosemount last weekend, both losses in which they gave up 16 goals total. Armstrong on the other hand comes in with one victory to date over North Metro, but they are giving up 7 goals per game so far this season. Both teams are capable offensively so this has the makings of a shootout. I give Hermantown the edge, but have a feeling they will not be able to stay out of the box, giving Armstrong the victory.
Semifinals
Cottage Grove vs Mahtomedi
These two do have a common opponent, Tartan. Mahtomedi beat them 5-1 while Cottage Grove lost 6-1, Mahtomedi moves on.
Armstrong vs Chisago Lakes
Same as the other semi-final, with Chisago topping North Metro 2-1 and Armstrong winning 7-2; Armstrong advances.
Armstrong vs Mahtomedi
I will continue the six degrees of seperation with scores here. While neither team has a common opponent, Roseville beat Jefferson 5-3 earlier this year and with Armstrong losing to Jefferson 6-2 and Mahtomedi defeating Roseville 3-2 the edge goes to Mahtomedi. A new team on the rise in D2 this year?
