Ok. Karl and Dueling have done their typical excellent jobs with their pre-season ranking of A and AA. Anyone care to combine the two and rank the best teams state wide?

The problem with this (and any other poll on this site) is that people can only choose one team. What if someone thinks two or more Class A teams are in the Top Five overall? Your poll won't allow them to vote this way.

I think maybe top 15 for STA or Breck, but not top 5. A teams are just not as deep as AA teams and over the course of an entire season would get worn down and would be easy to defend against because they wouldn't have a strong attack for 1/2 to 2/3 of the game. I think top-tier A teams are a little overrated but that's just my .02, no need to rip me for this.

I think it's interesting where Warroad and Hermantown were placed. Breck and STA next to each other makes sense. No matter where they were on this list, they belong next to each other with Breck on above STA IMO.

When I made up my little SOS measurement, I gave a "5"--the most difficult rating of an opponent--to the top 8 teams in AA, plus Breck, STA, and (after a bit of hedging) Warroad. So by my very crude measure, they're all in the top 11, and I'd say Breck and STA threaten for spots in the top 5.

I also think this is somewhat unusual--Breck and STA are very strong for Class A teams this year.

Of course, this is nearly impossible to measure properly at this point. We'll get a better picture after a few matchups between top A and AA teams.

Agreed. The next couple of weeks will certainly be telling for STA as they face Breck, Tartan and Minnetonka all before Christmas. While it's going to be a bit more difficult to get a handle on Breck as they only have A schools before they get Stillwater in the Schwann's Cup, they are at least quality teams like STA, Mahtomedi , SC Cathedral and Redwing. It should however be noted that they have not lost to any AA schools in the summer tournament or preseason scrimmages, beating Andover, Blaine, Moorhead (twice), Champlin Park, CDH and tying Benilde.

Gody23-Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously, when you make comments like this? You want to hang your hat on summer tournaments and preseason scrimmages?????

Your taking it a bit out of context as that was just part of what was posted. You missed the part where I agreed that it would be hard to say early on due to not playing any AA schools until the Schwann's Cup.
And....I'm not hanging my hat on it, just noting it for what it's worth.

Warroad in not a top five team in the state this year. However, Breck is. They have proven to be a deep enough team. Their speed is also incredible and won them a state title last year and probably will this year. They also have a pretty reliable goalie (understatement). People who say they can't play with AA teams are just refusing to give the team the respect because of their class. Someone on here said that the top tier A teams are a little over rated. It could also be said that the top tier AA are over rated. People act like they could just skip any A teams on their schedule cause they can't compete. It would be fun to see Breck play a top of the line AA team.

I agree with warrior. SOME, not all, people can watch a very good hockey team and put the blinders on just because they are class A.

If Breck is anything like they were last year they deserve a spot in the top 5.

Neither of them should be on there. EP will show Hermantown just how far out of the top five they really are when they play them on FSN on hockey day.

EP is ranked #1 and Hermantown is ranked #13. How far out of the top five are you talking about?? Is 8 spots far enough?

Hawks

Don't stress about this too much Hermantown will give them a game you can count on that.

Well cause they are on the poll I mean. I was replying to the person's post that I quoted. I know where they are in the actual rankings.

EP versus Hermantown.

First of all, EP shouldn't be compared to Hermantown's level. This is just simply a scrimmage game. EP will domiate this game. Sorry Hermantown. Good pub, but this is a high level metro school against a small school.

Ummm there is time in between games. I dont think rest has anything to do with the breakdown. But still agree A cannot compete with AA's best

Nothing more than "Warroad 2005" needs to be said. They went undefeated, won state and tied the AA runner up. Top 3 team all year.

Having less players to choose from will make you less deep in any sport. A few teams get more talent and are deeper. Plus, there are A sized teams who play AA. In 2005, the AA winner and runner up were opt ups.

Don't forget to mention that when they played the spuds both teams were ranked first in their respective classes.

I'm a lttle surprised that the poll is so slanted towards Breck being the only team close to deserving of a top 5 spot as in my view STA and Breck should be pretty close to even as they both have skill, depth, speed and quality goaltending. Surprised STA isn't getting more consideration.

Lake where do you get your facts that this is just a scrimmage game? It is one of both teams 25 scheduled games. Hermantown scratched Greenway off its schedule. Not sure who EP cut. Hardly a scrimmage when the game counts for your record and is one of the 25 scheduled games.

I think a lot of ppl will be suprised at how competitive this game will be. Not saying Hermantown will come away with the win but i think it will be more competitive that a lot of ppl think.

Heard "RUMORS" repeat rumors that when Hermantown coach Plante was informed that FSN was doing Hockey Day Mn there and was told to find a team to play that he called Coach Randolph from Duluth East and he was turned down. So he called the coach from EP and he said "We will be there". If it is true too bad for the kids. One time opportunity to play in this event and on TV. What fun for them. Like i said rumor has it but wouldn't be a bit suprised Randolph would turn it down. Guess playing Hermantown is not "BEYOND" EP!

He meant scrimmage as in EP is looking past the game, not that it doesn't count. And if that's what they do, they will be very disappointed with the result. Going in, EP will probably have more talent on the ice, but whatever venue they use (they should try to get the DECC) will be sold out with 90% people cheering for Hermantown. Hermantown is well coached year in and year out and Eden Prairie wouldn't put a class A team on their schedule if they didn't think it would be a good game. This will definitely be a great game.
