Is there a limited amount of periods a goal tender can play in one day? For example a goalie plays for the entire JV game, then after the first period of the varsity game the starting goalie is injured, can the goalie that played the JV game play the second and the third period of the varsity game. There is another goalie that could have been played.

The MSHSL has a limit of four periods total for varsity/JV games. However, the rules specifically exempts goalies from this rule in case of injury.

what about game or 10 min misconducts?

called the high school league last year regarding this matter and they said goalies were not allowed to play four periods, that the rule applied to goalies the same as players.

Everyone is allowed 4 periods.. one shift counts as playing a period. Some kids split jv and varsity, if they played one period of jv then they can play all three varsity but if the game went into overtime they couldnt touch the ice. Thats how I understand the rule. You are correct about the goalies as far as the rule applies to them as well.

so even if the starting goalie is hurt they wouldnt allow a goalie to play more than 5 periods? shouldnt that be up to the opposite coach?

The overtime is considered an extension of the third period not a additional period. Thus the player who has played 4 periods can still play in the overtime.

I remember hearing about this happening to Mtka a few years ago. A player skating late in his fourth period of hockey took a penalty which carried over into a fifth period on the score sheet. I think the high school league levied a severe penalty for the infraction.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but would like to hear the details if available.

Straight from the rulebook:

No student shall participate in more than four (4) periods on any given day. Exception: Any school whose 9th, 10th, or B-squad schedule has less than the maximum allowable number of varsity games may schedule four-team tournament for such 9th, 10th, or B-squad teams to bring the number of games to the allowable total. A maximum number of two (2) such tournaments may be scheduled per level. Each game in a tournament will count as one (1) contest. A player may participate in a maximum of six (6) periods per day in such tournaments. Participation in any period counts as one (1) period in administering the rules.All games scheduled and played as stated under non-League tournaments count toward daily player participation limitations.Exception: The spare goalie is an exception to the periods per day rule in case of injury or illness to the regular goalie during the games scheduled on that day.

Sorry, I meant to say the high school league said goalies were under the same stipulation of no "more" than 4 periods. The injury or illness is an exception, but I didn't think the original questioner was relating it to injury or illness, but more of a fairness issue.

If I'm reading the OP's post correctly, it seems they are saying the team has a third goalie and they didn't get to play either game and that was the problem. The starting JV goalie is also the backup varsity goalie and the backup JV goalie didn't play.

The team can only roster two goalies for the varsity game and if the starting goalie gets injured, the other goalie has to play. They can't substitute the backup JV goalie because the backup varsity goalie already played. If both goalies get injured, they either play with 6 skaters or have a player try to play goalie without goalie puck handling privileges.
