HOT for the zephyrs right now and is in the top 10 in the state for scoring (benik we don't care about you play bantam c high school teams) great speed hands and vision and connects well with his linemates and marshall. Does he have plans for post high school hockey? I think he would be a great D3 pick up because I doubt he has the size and strength to be examined at the D1 level. I would say NAHL teams are out for him. Any connections or anybody know currently where he might end up?

If anything, having Ben Marshall on the squad will give Zurn, Adams, etc all the possible opportunities for exposure.

Great point Goldfish. Zurn and the first line need to keep producing to pick up the slack for the rest of the squad. The glaring lack of depth was pretty evident in the losss to Breck last weekend. Breck had 3 lines that could skate and score.

p.s. you ever notice how Marshall NEVER leaves the ice? I wish I had that kid's stamina. He is fun to watch.

Not discounting Goldfish or any other points, just wondering. Being that Marshall has already committed to the Gophers, is Marshall still bringing exposure to some of their other players? I would think no other DI coaches are pursuing Marshall, and he is obviously above the DIII level.
Who would still be showing up to see Marshall with no chance of signing him?

There is always a chance. You always see kids who decommit. Plus there are many Junior leagues who are scouting him and all of ths scouts are a pretty close knit group and if they are watching Marshall and see someone else that catches their eye the word would spread to others in a hurry.

from what i see zurn is the motor of the forward line that mahtomedi has. if benik and hendrickson are playing d1 so can zurn...

Does anyone know if Marshall is going to Juniors next year or will he stay?

Are you of the impression whether Ben goes to Juniors isn't relevant to "Brandon Zurn of Mahtomedi" ???

Agreed, i've seen both hendrickson and benik play and i must say i'm NOT impressed especially with hendrickson, but i would say zurn coughs up the puck a little too much and needs to hit the weight room before anyone takes him real seriously

Icedad, I am "of the impression" that since this is a Brandon Zurn thread, lets talk about Brandon Zurn and not Ben Marshall.

Zurn is a senior and will graduate this spring. I don't see how Ben Marshall's decision regarding Jr's affects Zurn.

This is the sidenote as the relevance of Marshall's case.

What happnes is that the USHL, and I think now even the NAHL, will hold a draft. With Ben being a junior, I believe he may be draft eligible this year. I do not know for a fact if he was drafted last year, as 16-20 year-olds are eligible.

The USHL will scout the players from HS, AAA, Midgets, etc... and this year's draft is held in May, I believe.

Let's not also forget that Marshall will be drafted by an NHL team, most likely. Also, as was noted earlier, he could de-committ, the US national team may be looking... other colleges, even DIII. There may be a game in which a scout may be watching STA, knowing that Marshall was playing for Mahtomedi, and while scouting a STA player, maybe Zurn is so good defensively, he gets on the map.

So, how this affects, Zurn, Adams etc, is that while these NHL, USHL and NAHL scouts are looking at Marshall, those other players may catch the scouts' eyes, and they get drafted or an invite for a tryout.

Like in Marshall's case, if Don Lucia doesn't feel Marshall is ready for WCHA, if he is drafted by the Sioux Falls team, for example, Lucia will have Ben report there, and then Lucia keeps in contact with the coach.... what he wants him to work on, etc..

So, that's how Marshall ties in.. It's to his teammates benefit to capitalize on the exposure he gets.

I believe Marshall was drafted by Omaha Lancers two years ago.

Thanks!!! He was drafted last year in the Oct '88..

It's also a possibility, if the NAHL does now draft, they are looking, AND I think these USHL teams also trade players...

But if Zurn doesn't get drafted, and he has desire to attempt the next level, there are options to seek some NAHL teams and ask for when tryouts happen.

Some good points and zern is fun to watch. Too bad the next level will probably be too physical for a 125 pound player. Great to watch against the highschoolers though.

the question was, whether marshall will go to jr's NEXT year (or will he stay) and how will that affect Zurn.

Marshall's "tie in" regarding Zurn (& Adams) is strictly this season. They are Sr's., Marshall is a Jr. Anyone watching, and thereby seeing Zurn & Adams, have to be watching this year. In other words, if marshall goes to jr's next year, how will that affect Zurn ? (Zurn will have already graduated). Anyway . . . .

Truth be told, Zurn and Adams don't really need Marshall's exposure. These two guys are on fire.

And, there is no way you can talk about Zurn & Adams without talking about Mike Rose - he just might be the most important piece of the puzzle.

Correct... I made notice on one of the game threads he had 7 goals.. I assume all 3 are first line..

I was impressed with their play vs very talented, bigger Breck team. More than held their own.

So needless to say, after the final discussion I had here a couple days ago, I am surprised this thread wasn't picked back up after Mahtomedi's blowout game 11-0 over Bloom Kennedy.

Zurn had 5 goals and 1 A
Adams had 7 assists
Rose 2 G 3 A

5 goals is awfully impressive, so it shows he can certainly get the puck in the net and now Zurn is on the Class A leaderboard, I believe 5th with 17 goals.

well, kids going to have to grow some balls. talked to a mahtomedi folks today and he said zurn ran into the net on saturday with nobody around him, then layed on the ice in the midst of tears and needed the trainer to come out onto the ice. delayed the game about 5 min. then he needed assitance to the bench. 2 min later he was on the ice in full stride and full speed as if nothing happened at all. #1 thing scouts hate to see right there is a coward. also heard hes quite the WHINER and teammates are to fond of him. just the word in the ol' mahtomedi...i may be wrong

Have seen Zurn play many times and this doesn't sound like him at all.

Zurn had an nerve injury in his right knee which occurred in the elite league. I'm guessing that this injury caused him to run into the net. Another thing about Zurn is that he is the captain of the team, which was chosen by his fellow teammates. I think you're wrong about this kid.

I.L.G.60,

how can you come on this thread, criticize a player, call him a whiner and a coward, and then finish your post by saying "I may be wrong?"

Before you rip into someone, maybe you should get it right.

Go back to the youth hockey forum.

Understood, but I made the thread just by following points and box scores. Having to be carried off the ice then being back on 2 min later perfectly fine..poeschl must have some magic potion. HA. Hockeyballer and rushin cirles I realize your from mahtomedi and you need to defend Mr. Zurn but this sounded like a pathetic act to me, nothing against his skills
