NOTE: I cannot make opinions on the Dist 11 – 16. I am sure there are some great PeeWee hockey teams and players from those districts but I frankly don’t know enough to comment on them.
District 1 – the two teams to report on out of D1 is Highland and MPLS Park Orange. Both teams played in the Anoka Invite with Park beating Anoka for the Consolation Champ and Highland losing to Hastings in the 3rd place game. With District 1 being what it is, it is hard to gauge the overall competitiveness but I am probably not in the minority opinion that even though Park and Highland has some talent their depth will keep them out of the top 20. But, either of these two teams could surprise #5 thru #20 if they aren’t careful.
District 2 – With a 10 – 0 record Roseville is the cream of the crop. A recent 4 to 1 loss to Edina Green is probably a close enough score that they may be able to surprise Edina later on this year but not close enough to be considered #1b.
Stillwater Black is 7-1-1 in district 2 play but lost to unranked OMG Orange in the championship of the Superior tournament. Stillwater Red would be ranked 3rd out of this District but with a recent loss to Tartan doesn’t help their chances of being considered a team that will be heard from in March.
District 3 – What a cluster of teams from Wayzata and OMG. The two upper Wayzata B1 teams from Wayzata are playing well and winning their fair share of games. Wayzata Blue recently lost to OMG Gold 4 to 1 while the inconsistent Wayzata Gold beat OMG Gold 5rip in Edina tourney and beat them again 2to1 in district play. The lower Wayzata B1 team has the ability to beat any team in D3 but are lacking the consistency which will keep them knocking on the door of the top 20.
OMG has three balanced B1 teams. Last weekend, the Orange won the Superior tournament and Crimson won the Anoka tournament while Gold beat the previously undefeated Wayzata Blue 4 to 1 after losing for the second time to Wayzata Gold earlier that week. Flip a coin on the Crimson and Gold with Orange being able to give these two teams a challenge but just missing a little bit to knock either of these two teams off consistently.
Wayzata Blue and Gold, OMG Crimson and Gold are battling for the top position and some of the states best B1 teams will be left out of regions - I think only 2 come out of D3.
OMG Orange, Orono and Wayzata Navy will need an upset to make it out of regions.
Armstrong/Cooper and Hopkins are in the distance.
District 4 – nobody out of this District is making any noise to warrant top 20 although New Prague is 10 – 0 in district play they have lost to some non-top20 metro teams by large margins.
District 5 – Crow River Orange, STMA and Sartell are very even. Toss up as to who is going to win D5 but my prediction is STMA will come out ahead but they have landed outside this editions Top 20. Unfortunately I don’t see any of these team playing in late March.
District 6 – Edina Green is the best in the state even though their untarnished season took a hit from a loss to their in-association rival Edina White.
Tonka Black, Shakopee, Burnsville and EP Black are battling for 3rd with Waconia and CC capable of being the spoiler for the race for 3rd in D6. Can’t even guess who will come in 3rd as it is too close to call but probably Tonka Black or EP Black.
Overall, District 6 is very solid and will be heard from in February and March.
District 8 – Lakeville North has some nice wins but so inconsistent. Eagan Blue is the same way with some impressive wins but also some head scratching losses. Woodbury Blue Couple nice wins over Eagan Blue. Woodbury Blue is the same way – nice wins coupled with some tough losses. Nobody seems to want to take control over District 8 and therefore nobody will land in top 10.
Honorable mentions to Farmington Black, Rosemount Gold, Rochester(s), Eagan Green and Woodbury White.
District 10 - Sauk Rapids is at the top with an undefeated season thus far and nice 4 to 3 win over Wayzata Blue. This association does not field an A team and I think they did a great job of assessing their talent and placing them in the category that they could have a fun season.
Centennial is having a nice season but is fresh off of a 5 game losing streak. Champlin Park and Elk River are winning their fair share of games too. These three teams are racing for 2nd but won’t catch Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud Black fighting for top 4 consideration.
To summarize – the Metro Top 20 are:
1. Edina Green
2. Edina White (move up after beating Green)
3. (tie) Roseville
Sauk Rapids
5 (tie) OMG Crimson
Wayzata Blue
OMG Gold
Wayzata Gold
9. Minnetonka Blk
10. EP Black
11. Woodbury Blue
12. Centennial
13. Elk River
14. Shakopee
15. Lakeville North
16. Champlin Park
17. Eagan Blue
18. OMG Orange
19. Burnsville
20. Stillwater Blk
