#1 St. Thomas Academy @ #5 Mahtomedi Wednesday Jan. 20th

Game will be played at the the St. Croix Valley Rec Center at 7:30. I believe it is the only boys high school game in the state for wednesday evening. A large crowd is to be expected as the newly formed rivalry between these two teams should be a thriller. St. Thomas seeks their revenge as Mahtomedi has something to prove, that last years section final was not a fluke. Thoughts and predictions?
My prediction:
St. Thomas- 4
Mahtomedi- 3

Ilive, I like your prediction but have to disagree on two points. 1st Statement of "newly formed rivalry" is hardly accurate. STA does not and has never taken Mahtomedi lightly and that's prior to sections loss last year. Inspite of any Cadet trash talking both coaches and players respect Mahtomedi.
2nd Statement of "was not a fluke" isn't completely accurate since Mahtomedi's goalie played, what was generally agreed on, as the best game the guy ever played in this entire career. So was the win a "fluke" ahhh, sorta because it was not the expected out come since the goalie decided to be Superman. No kidding! It was like an imposter was inside the goalie's jersey. Good for them but crap for STA. With that being said the Cadets failed to played up to the goalie's performance instead they played worse.

Yeah I agree with that, but mahtomedi has a patchy program there are either good or just awful although as of the last few years they have proved they can play with the big schools. As of the other part about mahtomedis goalie wohlers, yes that probably was the best game of his career, but it would be any goalies best game almost 50 saves in a section final against the #1 rated team is tough to beat. I wouldn't say it was "impostor" because they guy has had many games like that, maybe not 50 saves, but played so his team can win. Anyways should be a great game on wednesday I'm excited to watch

Maybe I haven't seen the young man play enough and I certainly don't want to take anything away from a goalie. If STA is waiting for a moment to release the beast now is the time. A nice W over the conference champ would be perfect.
As for the comment the occassional "awful" game for Mahtomedi I've never seen one

but if they could manage one tomorrow night that would be ok with me

STA 4-1, Cadets have to much depth for Mahtomedi

Let's go ZEPHS! Can't make it out to the game tomorrow night, but this should be a doozy.
I predict 3-3 OT, Tie.

agreed, mahtomedi's 2nd and 3rd lines will be destroyed by STA's 2nd and 3rd, when marshall and the zephyr 1st line are gasping for breath the game will be controlled by the cadets

Hats off to Mahtomedi, they have put a product on the ice that the high school coaching staff can take full credit and be very proud. They will give STA a run, and the final will be 7 -3 STA. STA will win on the power play and 2nd & 3rd lines, Mahtomedi will sadly

run out of gas. Most STA goals coming in the latter period. A horse trainer & jockey knows when to quite whippin a thourogh bred in a race.....but a hockey coach....? I'll bet a Wed. night game with plenty of rest leading up to the game will provide Mahtomedi's best possible chance without that horse expiring before the finish. So with luck, and big goal production before the end of the 2nd period for Mahtomedi & the score could & may be closer. If this was a Saturday game after a normal week where Mahtomedi played on Thursday night, the score would be very very lopsided, cause that horse is expiring long before the 2nd period is over. Again great Mahtomedi Team, fabulous talent, but STA has deep talent year in and year out. They might just have a better pace too....if you know what I mean.....! Of course this whole theroy goes to pot if the Mahtomedi goalie (Marshal or Wholers) has a game they are capable of having, and have had in the past....Then we got a GAME! Should be fun to watch....

Last I saw score was 3-1 Mahtomedi after 1, but that was about 1/2 hour ago.

SCORING SUMMARY:
First: M-Adams (Mars, Zurn), 2:08, pp; M-Adams, 2:36; STA-Ramthun (Johnson), 4:48; M-Marshall (Gorman), 14:28, pp.
Second: STA-Isackson (Reid, Schroeder), 1:47, pp; STA-Schurhamer (Isackson), 8:45, pp.
Third: STA-Commers, 1:22, sh; STA-Crandall (Sattler), 6:33; STA-Kroska (Reid), 12:10, sh.
Saves: STA-Altrichter 6-x-x---6; STA-Wynne 1-10-10--21; Mahtomedi-Wohlers 11-14-6--31
Looks like Altrichter got the hook after Mahtomedi went ahead 3-1. STA stormed back outscoring Mahtomedi 5-0 in the 2nd & 3rd.

Missed the game, but reading the past few posts and analyzing:
Appears the Zephs started out strong, only to fade away in the 2nd and 3rd periods. The first line and Marshall must have ran out of gas...
Looks like a lot of penalties too. Wohlers had a 50% save percentage in the 3rd?! ...with two shorties to boot?? WHAT
They will meet again at the end of the year and hopefully make it a repeat of last years events.

You got it..I was there and it seemed the zephs were going to take control of the game after the first after wohlers made a couple dooozy saves. But they came out flat the second and third..STA made some pretty plays to leave guys WIDE and I mean wide open guys on the backdoor..not even wilcox couldn't have gotten those. Third period was all STA showing their depth and strengths that could not be match..the mistake between wohlers and zurn didn't help either neither were paying attention to storming fore checker and he snatched it up and put it home.
Shot counter there were brutal I keep my eye on the board and many many were missed on both sides my estimated shot count was 48-36 in favor of STA
STA can move the puck ike butter and bread in O zone, broke zephyr Dmen ankels and left wohlers looking at the ceiling asking "did that just happen?"
In conclusion STA was the better team and it showed tonight..the zephs got them 2 more times this year and we'll see if they can pull it together come beginning of march and do what they did last year..I doubt it can happen this year. STA is just to offensively strong nd smart, fun team to watch. Fun game..I had to exit after the 6th goal by STA

Hey Wingy you nailed it!
Altrichter's had the flu or something all week so he showed up playing on vapors.
Thanks

Thanks for the update ilivegreen. I'll be sure to make it to the rematch in February. I was at the Breck/Mahtomedi game, but have yet to see STA this year. Sounds like the Zephs will have their hands full come Section time. Hopefully they learned something from last night's game and can carry that forward through March. I win against HM in a few weeks would be a nice confidence boost like last year.

Hey thanks Wildnorthstar---I didn't get to the game ---could someone tell me what the penalty situation was----were the teams expressing undisciplined or frustrated behavior, or was it tightly ref'd?

I'd say the last 4 penalties by the Zephs were just dumb. It wasn't a reff problem for the Zephs.
It was actually lucky for the zephs to have had the score this close, they got two odd goals to start the scoring. They were dominated for the most part....espically by the Issacson line. The Zephyr D made so many mistakes and bad decisions that St. Thomas turned into odd man rushes. Wohlers was hot for the first part of the game and made plenty of nice saves.
St. Thomas has the fastest transition game I've seen this year.
Mahtomedi will have to have a lot better plan next time because they are not going to win a track meet with this team. The lower lines were pretty even but the 1st line for St. Thomas will be hard for Mahtomedi to handle.
