There aren't too many players who would attempt a comeback from such a devestating injury. (note that the StarTribune story is from 1972)

And best of luck to Christian Turner (Woodbury) and his recovery.

Thanks for the updated stories, wbmd!!

It's always nice to hear feel-good stories such as this, and the courage these student-athletes possess.

More importantly, it appears that coping with severe injuries such these two examples have encountered hasn't prevented them from pursuing a as high quality of life as possible, and that's a credit to their attitudes and the families behind them.

I've heard that Turner will make a full recovery and his injuries were not as serious as originally feared?

What is the latest?

Turner making positive progress

Turner recovering from fractured back According to his father, Woodbury boys hockey player Christian Turner, injured in an on-ice incident last month, is doing well in his recovery.

“His X-rays on Dec 22nd showed the vertebrae healing correctly and he won’t have another X-ray for five weeks.” Greg Turner reported in an email. “The neurosurgeon was optimistic that Christian will return to sports and feels that if things progress as they have, he will avoid surgery and the risk will be minimal for next year.”

The prognosis for Christian, who was suffered a fractured back after being checked from behind in a Dec. 10 game against intra-district rival Park, remains good.

He will remain in a brace for the full three-month interval that was initially called for, but hopes are rising that the junior will be able to return to the ice next season.

“We have the cautious optimism that any parent would have for their kid,” Greg Turner said.

Christian has been visited by not only members of his own team, but by the team manager (also PHS student body president) and captains of the Wolfpack squad that the Royals were playing when the injury occurred among several other well-wishers from the area.

“We had visits from the two Park hockey captains with a card signed by the team, heartfelt phone calls from principals of both schools, a call from Park’s student council advisor, a joint visit by the student body presidents of both high schools bringing a banner of well wishes signed by Park students,” Greg Turner said.

Christian’s own teammates recently presented the junior forward with a 40-foot scroll signed by WHS students.

“This incident has brought the best out of people from across boundaries,” Greg Turner said. “It’s always uplifting to know goodness is everywhere.”

Awfully nice to see that Christian Turner has made a complete recovery and scored a goal in his first game back in almost a year. The Royals shutout Shakopee 2-0 Friday night in the first round of the Woodbury Tournament

Christian actually played Lacrosse this last spring which to me was utterly amazing. His loss during last year's season had a huge affect on team depth and much needed scoring. I'm glad to see him back this year.
