How does your assn get parents to volunteer? Is it hard to staff your tournaments, concession stands, golf events...etc?

Some associations require parents to volunteer a certain amount of hours

The IRS takes a hard stance on parents working off hours.
Be careful as to what is posted here.

We strong arm them financially. $250 Volunteer deposit per child. If the family completes all of their required hours, the volunteer deposit check is destroyed. If hours are not completed, the entire deposit is forfeited.

We have a few families who willingly hand over their check and don't sign up for a minute of volunteer time.

We have good luck getting our tournament hours filled as a minimum of half of the hours must be filled at a tournament. Other volunteer needs during the hockey season are also filled easily. Hours outside of the season (golf tournament, community celebration, etc) are typically filled by board members and their close friends in the association.

YES. I volunteer well beyond our minimum required hours.

Why is that? How would youth organizations function without parent volunteers? Do they also take a hard stance regarding volunteer coaches?

Our parents don't "work off hours" to their own personal benefit. Any excess funds from tournaments, golf tournaments, etc. are applied toward the cost of ice and applied EQUALLY to all players.

BTW, our head coaches of travel teams (if a parent of a team member) are exempt from doing any other volunteer hours

The IRS deems it to be wages and collects both sides of the social security the federal income tax and penalty and interest from the organization. It does nto make sense in terms of what society wants but follows teh IRS code. Efforts are being made to change it for non-profits using this for volunteers under a certain $ amount.
