Class Act!

Do you want to hear something impressive.
Last night was Breck's senoir night.
Coach Les Larson recognized the senior class at tonight’s Breck-Saints game by taking an intentional “too many players” penalty at the start of the game. It seems the Mustangs had 16 seniors on the ice for the opening faceoff, that’s the 13 from the varsity and 3 from the JV who were seeing their first varsity action at the drop of the puck. Coach Larson was hoping that Breck could jump out to an early lead so he could give the JV players extensive playing time in the game. Which they did.
Last year the Breck girls coach Lenny Vanelli pulled his senior goalie on senior night going into overtime on a non-conference game because he wanted to instill more confidence into his team.....it ended in a tie
Classless!

Yes, the kids that pay the money, but don't have the skills

Very good- its great when you see these coaches go out of there way to recognize these kids and take time to remember what it is all about. I'm sure the kids will never forget that- great HS hockey memory.
I'm always amazed when I see a HS coach just go with his/her regular starting line up on Sr. night- like they are oblivious to the fact that it is Sr. night. If you have too many Sr's to start, do what this guy did or start the ones who don't usually start. They can figure out how to make it work- but some kind of effort is meaningful.

I would have enjoyed and respected your post much more with out the 2nd paragraph..
I'm sure you and I have no idea why decisions are made on the bench, and it seems Lenny has a "decent" level of success as well as respect of the players.

That was my first thought when reading this subject. I guess money means more than development-for-the-future at the private schools.

Are you sure he knew there were more than 6 of his own players on the ice...he is not exactly a rocket scientist..

Ok… if nobody else is going to crash this love-fest then I guess I will be forced to take the arrows.
First of all, while I admit the gesture makes us all feel warm & fuzzy; let’s consider the importance of the game: Breck vs Saints??? Do you think, for a moment, that Coach Larson was remotely concerned about starting this game with a man in the box? Breck out shot the Saints 58 to 15, and pummeled them into a final score of 14-1

. For crying out loud, Breck had two shorthanded goals in the 1st period

If this garners the coach anything more than a slightly embarrassing win

, then your love of all-things-Breck is way too obvious. Do you really think he would've honored the Sr’s in this manner had the game been against St Thomas, or even Totino. Just a little perspective

I'm still convinced he didn't know there were 12 guys on the ice.

Yes. There are several. Breck like many small schools has a "no cut" policy so anyone that goes out makes the team. This is actually one of the first years that they have even had two full teams.
It was a great night for several of those kids who have played 3-4 years of JV without ever logging a varsity shift. One of the JV seniors scored 2 goals which I beleive was was one more than he scored on JV this year!

This is a much better plan than telling that Sr they are no longer needed, after playing hockey since they were 4 or 5.
It's nice to hear of some schools that keep a spot open for those players.

So if 50 kids tryout, all 50 make either varsity or JV? I can see keeping Sr. on JV if you don't have enough tryout to fill both teams, but what happens if you have more than enough tryout?

There are all sorts of options when this occurs. If the player and the coaching staff put some thought and effort into situations like these, they can work out great. If one, or both put nothing into it, the kid that has been playing hockey for most of their life get sent home with little to no explanation.
It's not like this just pops out of the woodwork. The coaches well know if there is a senior in a questionable circumstance. The good ones get this resolved long before the season rolls around. The marginal to poor ones let it go until they bring the player in, after tryouts, and send them home wondering what the heck just happned.

That's a beautiful, politically correct response. But it doesn't answer the questions. If 50 tryout, do all 50 make the teams? I find it hard to believe that any school would have a NO CUT policy.

I would have to speculate the school wasn't worried about 50 players trying out.

"no cut policy" would most definitely be...
cut.

This seems more annoying to me than a class act. I'm sure senior night means alot to the seniors but there's really no point in putting 16 of them on the ice for the opening faceoff

Yes, but that works much better for a sport like football, not hockey. The football players at SJU all stand on the side lines for home games, but there is a much smaller number of players that actually make the travel squad for away games. Many of the players will never see the field during their career and some will hang em' up before graduation because they know this. I don't see a no cut policy being possible in a big hockey community. The side lines are 100 yrds, the hockey bench is not.

Although I get your point that if 50 actually tried out, they would have to cut some but there really is no chance of that happening

Do you not think that he has any control over his schedule? I know nothing about Breck or the coach, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say he purposely scheduled this game for senior night so he could do such a thing like that. My school did the same thing for Senior night and scheduled a very weak opponent. Granted we almost lost haha but that was because their goalie played out of his mind and the final was 3-2 with the final shots being about 60-15 in favor of us.

Another example of doing the ground work ahead of time, to make a good decision for the players.
