Topic pretty much explains it. Any teams have a foreign exchange student come in and really help out a team?

Well...help out how? State tournament or help improve on a regular season?

Moose Lake had a kid by the last name Mattila (from Finland I believe) who was just a great player to watch. Granted Moose Lake didn't make it past 1st round.

First example which comes to mind for me was Sergei Petrov. Starred for a very good Cloquet team in the early 90's.

Come to think of it, Cloquet has had a share of foreign exchange student/players over the years.

This is true, lets not count out players who have transferred to East such as Fitzgerald, Turnball, Heine etc. I could name them forever. I would say if you look at transfers who go to East as compared to exchange students at Cloquet, East would have more "out of town" players over the last fifteen years. It is unfortunate that East loses players to Marshall year in and year out though. I have heard that East has had some foreign exchange students that have tried out, but have never made the varsity. Is this true? And if it is I would say the reason a foreign exchange student at Cloquet generally makes the team is the lack of depth. Recently Cloquets foreign exchange students have been nice players, but not even close to the level of Petrov. Esse did cut a foreigner from the Czech Republic last year who would have probably been on the top two lines, but he decided to let one more bantam make JV/Varsity since he knew it would be a tough year.

I want to say that Anoka had a pretty good exchange student, who did well at the state tournament in the late 90's or early 00's (1997, 1998, or 2003). Don't quote me on it though.

East had a foreign exchange student play JV 3(?) years ago. I remember him getting a couple of shifts with the varsity on senior night.

The two Carlson/Karlsson/however-you-spell-its Cloquet had earlier this decade were pretty nice players. Good supports for Johnson and Jokinen.

Yes they were but not at the level of Petrov thats for sure. I think Central had an exchange goalie who was pretty decent a couple years ago if im not mistaken.

i'm not sure if petov actually played at umd or not. he may have been thrown out of the country before that, i can't recall.

breck always had outstanding foreign exchange students. i think the best may have been ola biltzen (sp??) and pele lindberg. biltzen was one of the top rated finnish players for his age group.

I believe that the Matilla kid from Moose Lake is going to come back to the states and try to skate somewhere...

Hutchinson had a Finnish goalie when they went to state one year in the mid- to late-90s.

New Prague had a couple of Czech kids one year - one of them went on to play at Augsburg.

Warraod probably had the most accomplished exchange student in a player from the mid 80's. His last name is Lambert from Canada. He only played one year, as a sophomore, but went on to play in the NHL. Very nice hockey player.

Anders Anderson from Sweden played for I Falls in the early 80's, then went on to play at UMD,although he didn't play much there.

Two Harbors had a goalie for 2 years- Nikola Balaban- from Yugoslavia before the breakup and war. That's why he played 2 years here 91/92 I beleive is when he played there.
