There is no WI forum, but I thought I would share this here.

A private school , University School out of Milwaukee beat the #1, #2, and #3 ranked teams (all with only 1 loss on the season) in consecutive games to take the title! In the final they faced the team ranked #1 most of the year. They were OUTSHOT 45-17 but had the goalie that was able to ride them to the title 5-3 w/en goal.

The final was a rematch of a game that University School lost 7-3 AT HOME early in the year. University School started slow with 7 loses and multiple ties earlier in the year, but turned it on late in the season. They beat the defending state champions who returned their best player, then beat the #9 ranked team before beating 1,2,&3 at state.

Just goes to show you that no one is safe (Tonka). I was able to listen to part of the games live on the net over the last few days. Just got me VERY excited about the MN tourny this week.

Sounds like an awesome experience. Definitely agree with you on the "no one is safe" part, especially at this time of year. Good work University School!

When a team gets hot a team gets hot. Nice job. Great experience for the players that they will likely take with them for their lives.....

Just remember, Superior is WI's #6 team.

Blake beat University School 4-2. You have it wrong. Shows how weak Wisconsin High School Hockey is.

The sad thing is they were playing their "hot" goalie. During the season they played two goalies, a junior and a soph. The junior was 2nd team all conference, but was NOT chosen to play the state games. They opted for the soph, his season stats: 1.15 gaa and .947 save%. He gave up all 4 goals on 10 shots in the 1st (they had an empty netter). Kid is not going to sleep well tonight.

That is correct. WI is definetly a lower level of hockey, but this was early when University School was losing a lot.

University School is typically one of the top teams every year in Wisconsin. Probably comparable to how HM or Breck is to Minnesota. They took longer to put it together this year , but are usually in the hunt by years end. Wisconsin does have 4 aaa teams vs 1 in Mn (Shattuck), but it looks like they are making strides every year in getting high school hockey to major status level. Some of their bigger cities still have to coop to put a team on the ice (ex: Appleton). Once they get teams for every decent size high school so intra-city rivalries are formed it'll take off and the state tournament will be more like Minnesotas. The sport sells itself. The more kids and families are exposed to it the more it will grow.

I disagree. Midget AAA isn't really that much better. shattuck (Ranked #1 in the country according to myhockeyrankings.com) plays some of the better high schools closely. AHA lost by 1 goal and there not even a top team this year.

you were half right, i had two main points.

1. The best players in Wisconsin do play Midget AAA not high school making it hard to compare it with Minnesota high school

2. About Midget AAA i meant it is much better for the hockey player and his development, instead of playing 25 regular season games you play 70 and also against much better talent. In high school hockey in minnesota the best players are spread out over many more teams.

The tier 1 elite league is the equivalent to the elite league if they played a 70 game regular season, except there are 19 more teams and the skill level is a little higher.

Yea, I'm not sure what that means. And I disagree about the private school thing. It's always a good when HM wins but when any other private school team does it, it isn't.

Regarding WI hockey, my son's U16 team was in a tournament at Grantsburg, WI this year. We ended up playing a team from WI for the championship (and won). I thought they were pretty big for being U16 kids until I found out they were actually an all-star team from like 4 or 5 small towns from HS teams.

They were pretty physical and had some talent but they just didn't have very much depth so when their top 2 players were disqualified for 5 penalties each we ended up winning in OT.

So the moral of the story is they have a ways to go if they are sending teams to play MN U16 teams.

Ya I don't care....! Just kidding.. That's actually pretty cool. I'd like to see how the best teams in WI high school hockey stack up against the MN teams.

Superior is usually one of the better teams in WI. They play a pretty heavy load of MN teams. Sometimes they own the MN teams and others (Like this year) they struggle with them. They play the likes of Duluth Marshall, East, Denfield, Cloquet, Hermantown, etc. They were way down this year, but can compete at times...

You already can know. Superior is usually a top Wisconsin team, they play in a conference with teams in NE Minnesota......

Say in a hypothetical world a girls hockey team played a boys hockey team. The girls team lost. Then their excuse for losing was that their best players chose to play basketball instead of being on the hockey team. Really it's just an excuse because even with their best players they would've still lost.

WI hockey and the quality of players who come out of WI are much lower than that of MN. Saying the best players play in a different league is simply an excuse.

That is great if a player is going to be a good hockey player, but it really takes away from the high school experience, and from other sports. Sure they are playing 3 times as many games, but they are also missing out on being on the football and baseball teams as well.

Not my place to say what track is better, but cross training is very good for the development of players. Some of the best players in the country come from MN where they play 26 games a year. Most of the good ones are either 2-4 sport athletes or in other hockey leagues year round.

Thats what Im trying to say... you get much more development as a hockey player in this league, and how are they missing out on the high school experience? they still go to school.

I worked the penalty box a few weeks ago when #1 ranked and previously unbeaten Minnetonka lost to Hudson's U16 team.

Hudson U16 beat or tied all the LPH top ranked Minnesota teams this year; however, the final ranking moved Hudson, WI down from 3rd to 8th for some Minnesota district playoff reason.

Looks like the Ponies will not have even U16 success as a remaining source of pride for long.
