I don't think either festival has an edge on metro talent. It seems to depend on the coach who is recruiting the individual team.

Probably MN Selects as it's recognized as the best of these type tourneys. MN Selects, like the MN Elite Classic (spring) and Midwest Selects (fall) are birthyear tourneys. Checkbook hockey but fun for the kids to skate on a regional team.

Super Series is different as it uses MN Hockey level definitions based on July 1 through June 30 birthdays. Probably not the overall caliber of players as MN Selects but another fun opportunity for kids to play on regional teams.

Here's a link to MN Selects that can get you rosters and scoresheets.

What do you mean by checkbook hockey? Is that kind of a put down?

I think that's the intent....but in reality, isn't it all really just "checkbook hockey" including association hockey? (With the obvious exception of shinny hockey at the park, of course.)

I can't speak for all age levels but i think they might be pretty even. As someone else said it depends on the coach and the Super Series is put on by the Blades and therefore, i'm guessing, most blades players are in it.

My son has done both Last year Selects this year the Super series. Super Series this year was way better then Selects last year.

The Elite classic isn't birth year. they go major and minor at each level. That tournament seemed good this year, as there were no other "competing tournaments" that weekend.

It really does seem to come down to the coach that fills the team. looking at the 99 and 98 age group in St cloud last weekend, I didn't see many of the top players at those age groups. I'm guessing the super series had them.

These are fun tournaments (all of them)for the kids and coaches who put the teams together (if they can get some good players). It is the ultimate of check book hockey, but a good fund raiser for the groups putting them on (ie; Blades, etc).

I have always thought if you kake the Super Series roster 3 years you are pretty much guaranteed D1!!!

There are tons of USHL and D1 scouts there!

Selects you need to make the roster for sure 4 years.

Agreed???

Maybe at the younger levels. But at the older levels (pee wee, bantam, etc) there was a little something called the Minnesota State Youth Hockey Tournaments going on around the state. That meant many, not all, but many of your top players across the state were playing in the various state tournaments and missed the Elite Classic this year.

Passthefoil wrote:It is really unfortunate from both sides (boys & girls) that the teams are not formed with the "best" players from every region. Some parents say no more, hockey season is done, some kids say no more as well, but mostly (IMHO) it is a collective network of parents that pat each other on the back and make the effort to "we will take your player, if you take my player". This tradition has been going on for some time now and is no mirage to anyone who has been involved with the formation of teams.

It was clear this past weekend that not all of the top talented kids were not playing again in this years Select Tournament. When I asked where "Billy" or "Suzie" was there was never a clear answer to why. Shoulders being shrugged and the proverbial, "I dont know". It comes down to the all important issue, is Selects for the parents or the kids? It also begs another question; do the elite players need Selects, or does the Selects program need the Elite players?

Many knowledgable coaches of various competitive levels and competant fans of the youth programs say that the divide is about 65/35, so it begs the question is Selects really "select"?

This topic is highly debatable. I am sure we will hear from others on this subject and we will see emotional responses as well as backers of the selects process and even admirers of this post. Lets figure it out and make it better, if possible.

Very true when you see players that did not play on A or B1 teams racking up goals and points you know that the series truly watered down.

A lot of the kids have skipped the last few years as they are popularity contests amongst the parents and many players just choose to pass after the season.

The sad part is it is now passing thru to the Adv 15's and above, kids do not see it as an honor to play or get exposure they just pass on what is perceived another beauty contest.

Good fund raisers and a lot of fun for those that choose to be part of it, but needs to be kept in perspective.

I'll disagree with you here....The 15's do a pretty good job of attracting the top players in the State. There is usually a "surprise" or two when you look at the final roster that goes to Nationals, but for the most part you will see the top players.

The 16's and 17's is a little more political and who moves on is generally based on past performance than it is how you do in the particular tryouts.

My best educated guess is the Super Series is just one notch above MN Selects. The reason being the different Age Classifications. In theory Super Series can have kids six months older than Selects. At any level six months can make a huge difference in Skill, and Size. I saw several of the Super Series games this past weekend and was quite impressed with the quality of play. I did not make it to St.Cloud, But their rosters at the equivalent level seemed smaller in size, and a smidgen less skilled based on what I saw over the winter season.

The super series had a tough time filling the age groups. Don't know why.

A bunch of factors so don't know that one is any better than the other. Probably varies at every level. Players with birthdays between January 1 and June 30 may migrate towards MN Selects and players with birthdays after June 30 may play with more frequency in the Super Series. There are some Blade loyalties to the tourney obviously as they're the sponsor. I can also say a lot of families are tired of travel, especially when they just completed the winter season that may have had 2-3 out of town tournies and then maybe had to travel for regionals and state. Could be 4-5 winter travel tournies and then up to St. Cloud? That impacts the decision of some metro families. Especially when you have 3-4 kids playing.

Was not happy with the talent last year on all four teams at the selects saying that my son loves the trip to St. Cloud with his buddies. This yr we did SS 10 X better hockey. not sayin just sayin . I think the East won?

depends on the age group. I heard the SS had trouble getting full rosters and was a bit watered down. Just looking at some of the '99 and '00 rosters from the Selects seems like many of the upper talent played in that tourney.

I would say the SS does draw the top talent from the metro area. This year I did notice there were a number of Machine players in the tournament which is nice to see particularly at the 99 level. Have had a chance to see both and would say SS with out a question draws better talent. This year the North was very strong along with the West at all levels. The West won the Squirt Major over North in OT.

The Selects publish rosters for all age levels. Why don't the SS?

Anybody from the blades care to comment? Terry?

I'm just saying, easier to compare which is better hockey if you can see the rosters for both tournaments.
