So many "old" 9th graders , Kids who started school late who should be in 10th grade already.

What is the point of that remark? Many educators suggest that boys born in the summer should delay entrance in Kindergarten by a year. Parents usually do this for emotional maturity reasons, not Select 16/17 reasons. Pretty much a standard practice.

This is why MN Hockey is currently looking at moving the registration date from July 1 to June 1. Let's hope they make such a move which will benefit many kids in this situation.

the older kids have been the stronger kids all through school. many don't do that well when they are finally put in against kids there own age. i'm pretty sure hockey has fewer players that have delayed kindergarten than many sports.
delayed for "emotional maturity" I've never heard a parent admit to that.

i hate to burst your little bubble but this program doesnt go by grade its by age so if your little johnny didnt make it wasnt because thier are (old 9th graders) lol.. i seriously cant believe you guys have been involved in hockey long enough to have hs age kids and dont know that. brings me back to another point thats why i stopped fighting with idiots on this hockey forum its pointless.

Which 16s chosen played Bantams their most recent season?

USA U16 has nothing to do with what grade the players are in. The player has to be born in 1994. period. End of the complete non-sense. If anything, it's a credit to the 1994's still in 9th grade as most of them are late born October-December 1994's.

That's true and one or two posters above may not have been following that fact, but changing the dates as noted would have the effect of evening up the playing experience a bit. With fewer exceptions, bantams would compete against bantams and high schoolers would compete against high schoolers. That's how Canada does it too, right?

What is the argument against the change?

They certainly have been excellent players. Probably, they still are. I do think that overall the 16s list looks amazingly accurate. When a few don't make it who are expected to, I believe it is a good sign that the selections are NOT "all made before the weekend begins" and that even the studs have to put up a good showing at tryouts to make it to the next level.

Perhaps there's a little more integrity built into the process than some of us tend to believe at times.

i agree totally with you jimbo just watching section 8 at 16's for the weekend the kids i thought should make the cut did so that makes me think everything is on the up and up.

Very surprised at the performances of some of the goalies they took at 16s. . .by save percentage they took the 7th, 10th, and 12th place tenders. It brings up the old question of do you consider the history in placing a player and if so, why bother having tryouts and the first round of the tournament (Yes, I know. . .$$$). It does seem quite unfair to those kids who play well in the tryout or tournament and then are passed over for those that had lesser performances.

The statistics were suspect all weekend. I know that some shot counts were way off and sometimes stats were reversed between two goalies in a game. I agree about Kautz though. He did not have a good weekend. But he's talented. He'll be back.

The goalies only play a half a game, I think it is fair to look at the accomplishments of the players from their past seasons. Do the tryouts matter? Looks like they did for Brock Kautz. Had a very nice season for Century. Has always been a top goalie and still is. Feel he should be there. Had a great game in the championship. Gave up 5 goals in a half in his second game, but 4 were penalty shots. So we reward shooters by giving them great scoring chances and can add to stats and punish the goalie.

He didn't make Select 16 Final 54's. It's the end of the world isn't it? Big deal, it's just selects.... What is making the 54's going to do for a player in the long run?

Where is the "D" player from Spr. Lk. Pk. thats suppose to be so good? Doesn't look like going from AA TO A school did much for his development or maybe his dad didn't know the coaches this time

How does a kid like JT Kohlquist (Hermantown) not make the list of 18 defensemen? Did he just have a down weekend or what? Not claiming a conspiracy but that kid is a darn good defenseman. Had to check the list twice to make sure my old eyes saw it correct. Anybody get to the games that could make comment? thanks

Unfortunately, goalies are a crapshoot when it comes to tryouts. My guess is a blend of how they played with a blend of where they played last year goes into how they pick.

Save percentages from the weekend are a bad indicator. What if one kid played on a team with defensive holes, or a team that had a few guys that liked to take penalties (resulting in a lot of penalty shots). Couple that with the always suspect scorekeeper stat taking plus an unreliable Hockey Hub providing stats and you have a recipe for mistakes if you rely on it.

Looking at last season's results for goalies is also not how you should select. Think about it, some of the goalies, due to timing, got a lot of crease time and put up decent statistics; while other goalies, due to timing, had a solid Junior or Senior in front of them that limited their ice time. Does that mean that goalie couldn't have racked up the same stats or better playing at Rochester Century? It means that one goalies path was more fortunate than anothers.

So, save percentages are bad. Past statistics are bad. Neither are equal playing fields. I would love to know what the 'secret sauce' is that they look at in goalies at the end of the day! I like much better how the skaters get evaluated!

In the end, someone gets cut. With the six goalies that are left, you could draw names out of a hat and have two exceptional goalies and would not have to explain your decision.

I was also very suprised that Alex Johnson from STA didnt make it. He looked solid over the weekend.

these whole tournaments are all about reputation, money, and relationships. If u didnt make the team and a kid that is not good made it in your eyes, get used to it because it happens a lot. i would just be nice if u got the break once in a while though right. Unless the kid makes the final cut and does well in the final tournament thing, the whole deal is meaningless.

I don't think it's meaningless even to participate in your regional tryouts. As another poster said, you could have been behind upper classmen and not been seen anytime during the year, but, if you have a good tryout, you will be seen. This doesn't mean chosen because there certainly needs to be some credit for those kids that showed up during the season. Short story long, the more you demonstrate you're a capable player, the more you stand to benefit in the long run.
