Sounds like the wrong guy got let go. The AD sounds like a real puss. Really must communicate with his coaches?

Normally I don't advocate reading the comment sections on newspaper articles, but the comments on that one shed a bit more light on the whole situation.
Busy week around here for coaching controversy.

This sounds like another story of the tail wagging the dog. Little Bobby got yelled at, and runs home to tell mommy. Grow up ! Parents (especially the ones that never played hockey) are ruining this game...stay out it !!! Brutal decision Sauk Rapids.

It has nothing to do with players and parents.
It has everything to do with the coach.
There was so many complaints over the years finally the Administration stood up and said enough. I know of at least 10+ complaints just this year.
In this case change is good. The old boys network is now dead, lets play in the 21st century.

Complaints or whining? Interested in hearing some of the complaints?

He took them to state didn't he? He's from A hockey town. Maybe S.Rapids was not ready for a coach from a town like that. Another poster said he knew of ten coplaints. What are they?

Some details:
Coach Weston has multiple complaints over many many years of coaching. There are so many different levels of complaints that it would take a novel to write them all down.
He had a months notice of the non renewal. He was given the option of quietly retiring with a nice sendoff. He chose to go the non renewal route. He can appeal but he is done at Sauk Rapids.
At the school board meeting Monday there is a time for open floor input of 1-2 minutes. You'd think after 20 years of coaching some of the 200+ parents who've come through the program with their kids these parents would stand up in support of him.
Zero...nada...none spoke up in support.
Everyone in SR knew this was coming...and no parent showed their verbal support. We knew it was time for a change.
3 people did stand in favor of Weston. One a 15 yr old player who he picked up from his home a week prior to the meeting with two others and twisted their arms to go in support of him. One the assistant coaches brother (who did not identify himself as the Astnt Coachs brother) and a former player who now runs an atrocious summer (we participated last year and it was awful) program who needs him to send him players.
Two spoke against Weston. Both current and former parents. The rest of us wrote letters and emails to HS staff and School Board. I believe there was closer to 15+ letters on file this year. 1/2 of the team.
Its time to move forward with a serious person who wants to coach, discipline, teach and lead these boys to become good to great athletes and men.
The parents did their job in this case. We did what we are supposed to do - parent. We are serious hockey parents who expect good coaching and leadership.
I would suggest the Mods close this thread. It will just become a forum for the coaching staff to vent against the parents.

What exactly "are parents supposed to do?" And what exactly is a "serious hockey parent?"

Sorry probably not great verbage...
Its just that parents always receive the blame. But ultimately the coach is in charge and should do his/her job.
If not you are dismissed.
There is always this big outcry when coaches are dismissed. Guess what sometimes they need to go.

Please give some concrete examples? How was he not in charge? How did he not do his job? Did AD observe practices, games, dealing with problems or just listen to a bunch of whiners?

Unless you are willing to provide some facts that prove the parents are just being a "bunch of whiners", maybe you ought to quit calling them that.
What's good for the goose......

Haven't seen any valid facts why he should have been dismissed? Just people whinning that he should go.

...and I haven't seen any evidence that the parents are just whining, either.

Not sure....nodoby has gone public with specifics...the only thing we know is that there WAS a hearing at the school board meeting, and evidently, the coach didn't get much support from anyone.
And another thing, the coach wasn't fired...his contract just wasn't renewed. Stuff like that happens all the time. What's the big deal? Parents and players weren't happy, the AD heard their concerns and decided a change was necessary. That doesn't mean that the parents where "whining", unless your definition of a "whiner" is someone voicing their concern - either by email or by an end-of-season survey.

Was there an assistant coach there name Van Halbeck or something at Sauk? If so, was he also not renewed.

I believe he can reapply under the new coach.
I do not know for sure if he was non-renewed.
btw..both assistant coaches quit this year. One in March. One in early April due to a move to CT.

I used to work with Van Halbeck's little bro about 4 years ago, and I thought he was there.. Thanks... Did the asst quit, BECAUSE of what was happening??

No one knows for sure. The players knew he quit but don't know why.

I told you they weren't whinning, not enough. What's the big deal? This was a career he chose and and has been doing it for 20 years. It sounds like from the atricle there was no yearly evaluation done by the AD, if he had done this and had concerns he could have asked for changes. If coach refused or did not meet expectations then not renewing contract would have been valid. Just because players and parents weren't happy is not a reason for dismissal. Know wonder why most of the good young coaches are going the junior ranks.

20 years and only 10-15 complaints. Yipes! Roseau gets that many in one year, but they are settled between the AD, Coach and complainers. Seems Sauk needs to put forth a system to weed through justifiable compaints and unwarranted yipping!
