The problem with this QRF computer ranking is that it tries to convince you to not believe your own eyes. The KRACH seems to be better.

What's interesting is that KRACH and QRF use the same data. So, the differences are in the different algorithms - not due to different data. I've long preferred KRACH (but I'm biased)...
PS - The most recent KRACH changed a bit due to results from last night. The interesting thing is to see if it changed in a way that makes sense based on the new results/data/scores...

What weighs the heaviest in this formula? strength of schedule? goal differential? just curious
Posted: Thu Feb 03, 2011 1:26 pm
by capitalist
By far the heaviest index in this formula is nickname. For instance, after losing 3 straight in early January, Lakeville North still received 100 bonus points for the nickname "Panthers" and moved up 2 spots. And recently LN used those 100 bonus "Panther" points to maintain a spot at #6 after losing to Apple Valley (record 6-19-0).
Note: All nicknames other than "Panthers" receive 1 bonus point.

I've been puzzled by QRF's high ranking of Lakeville North (now #6) myself. Both KRACH and LPH have consistently ranked them quite a bit lower, pretty much all year it seems. Must be something different in the formula compared to KRACH.

LPH has had LN much lower. KRACH had them pretty high early on without much data to operate on. At that time, so too did QRF. It seems that QRF and KRACH started to treat LN differently over time.
Interestingly, KRACH and QRF use the same input data (same scores entered on the "minnesota-scores.net" website). So, the only difference is the algorithm used by each.
It might help to know that QRF uses a few more inputs into its algorithm than KRACH.
KRACH is a very simple algorithm that only considers how many games you've won or tied and the rankings of the teams you've played. That's it.
KRACH doesn't care by how much you've won or lost, it doesn't weight games based on class of opponent, and it doesn't weight the most recent games as more important than those early in the season.
For more info. on QRF see:
http://minnesota-scores.net/qrf.php
QRF Explained
The Quality Results Formula (QRF) was created to try and rank teams from different parts of the state. I won't go into specific detail about the formula, but can give you an idea of how it works.
Each game is given an individual QRF (iQRF) based four things (listed in order of importance)
Win or Loss
Opponent wins
Class differential between the teams
Margin of victory (or defeat) with a cap on both ends.
Logically, the more wins an opponent has, the higher your opponents Class is, and the more you win by the higher your iQRF is for that game.
When all of a team's iQRF's are added together and divided by the number of MN games played, you come up with a team's QRF.
*Only MN vs. MN games count.
This number is then compared to other teams in the state to come up with an overall ranking. The QRF ranking should only be used to compare teams within the same Class. Cross-Class comparisons are not comparing apples to apples.
For more info. on KRACH see:
http://www.collegehockeynews.com/info/?d=krach
or (if you really like math...)
http://www.mscs.dal.ca/~butler/krachexp.htm (note that this states an "average team" has a rating of "100" - this is not true for my implementation. Instead, an "average team" has a rating of 10.)
Basic Explanation
KRACH — or “Ken’s Ratings for American College Hockey” — is the implementation for college hockey of a sophisticated mathematical model known as the Bradley-Terry rating system, first applied to college hockey by a statistician named Ken Butler.
This method is based on a statistical technique called logistic regression, in essence meaning that teams’ ratings are determined directly from their won-loss records against one another. A key feature of KRACH is that strength of schedule is calculated directly from the ratings themselves, meaning that KRACH, unlike many ratings (including RPI) cannot easily be distorted by teams with strong records against weak opposition.
The ratings are on an odds scale, so if Team A’s KRACH rating is three times as large as Team B’s, Team A would be expected to amass a winning percentage of .750 and Team B a winning percentage of .250 if it played each other enough times. The correct ratings are defined such that the "expected" winning percentage for a team in the games it’s already played is equal to its "actual" winning percentage.
