This last weekend our team from 'up north' played in a tourney in the cities. Was the bantam level, and they played 12 minute periods with no resurface at all. Is this common in the cities? Its not in our hometown. Just curious... The way I look at it, we basically got shortchanged basically a whole game over the weekend. And for a thousand dollar entry fee??

Ice time is at a premium in many parts of the Twin Cities. 12 minute periods are the norm for a lot of tournaments. Other considerations is trying to keep a tournament on schedule and getting all of the games in during the alloted time.

That is not normal for bantams in the Cities. Our regular season games are 15 minute periods which are resurface after the second period, and most tournaments are also 15 minute periods with a resurface after every 2 periods. Who hosted?? I also would not have been happy.

That is crazy! I sure hope that your coach and more important your association never goes back to that tournament.

Come to East Grand Forks tournaments, 17 minute stop time periods with a resurface for Bantams, Pee Wees, and 12U, 15 minute stop time with a resurface for Squirts. $475 and pay at the door.

In the Cities at the BB2 anc BC levels, league games in our District 6 are 12 minutes with no resurface. Idea is to complete in one hour.

I don't agree that is should be this way. I think at Bantam, the level they are playing shouldn't dictate a shorter game. My understanding from MN Hockey is that the length of periods for District league game is a District decision. Now, that wouldn't prevent a tourney from doing whatever they want. Its obviously an ice-time issue though. Not that you should accept this.

All district 16 games for bantams and peewees (all levels) are 17 minute with a resurface. Girls are 17 minutes unless the coaches agree to 15 minute periods because of shortage of numbers.

Squirts - who cares?? they usually do 15 minutes with a resurface.
Mites ???? whatever ice time you have.

Tourneys are 15 to 17 minute periods with a resurface.
Mite jamboree may be less.

Okay, I lied as it isn't up north and this is the Youth Forum. It was U12 in Princeton. And 3rd period was 14 minute run time. They had a PWB1 tournament which was scratched. I have no idea if that too would have have been 12/12/14 runtime as well?

we have yet to see a resurface in D6 association play for BB1.

too many penalties to begin with. they barely get the games in the allotted hour fifteen even without the zam.

I vote for 20 minute periods.

the tourney was in inver grove. it was a combined bantam b and c tourney. we were in the b part of it. i thought they did a good job of holding everything together with the weather being what it was, but the short periods and no resurface really threw me for a loop. for a thousand bucks, i thought we didnt get our moneys worth though.

when your team signed up for this tournament, whoever did it, should have known the parameters of it and details, including the period length. If they still chose to go, blame Canada!

12 minutes are bad.
Wolf Pack only plays 20 minute periods just like the NHL!!!

Here in the cities we do not own our arenas they are owned by the city or county. We are charged per hour and due to cost we have to limit our games to an hour otherwise the cost to run our tournaments does not make any of the associations any money. I know we go to tournaments up north because the games are longer. Disadvantage is here in the cities we at Pee Wee's we play three 12 minute periods, Up north they play 15 to 17 minute periods which means per game teams south of St.Cloul play 3 to 5 minutes less per period than teams up north. For a whole season that is quite difference. What is MAHA going to do to resovle that, Nothing as it has been this way for a long time. Hands are tied in the south half of the state the cost of hockey is getting so exspensive that in most places it is costing so much numbers are dropping but MAHA keeps reporting increases. Everything you do in hockey costs money all the way from sign-ups to fees to coaching clinics, ice times, fundraising, equipment. Please bring back the good old days of playing some games outside, Life magazines for shin pads, Montgomery Wards skates. If teams played half there games outside maybe inside ice would cost less due to supply and demand. Aldrich arena had a fire sale this year due to lack of interest. Won't Happen, Bigger is better. Hockey is a money sport where you have to go to summer training and AAA hockey. Please bring back the 3 sport athlete. Watch out MAHA with some of the rules you are thinking about, I might come out of retirement to start my own AAA team and make big money just as you are driving everyone to do. Example: No checking until Bantams, No icing when shorthanded. Have you seen a girls high school game, they don't have checking all the way through until high schhol and look how they hit each other. I have seen the Gieco commercial with the old drill sargent in mambie pambie land you jack wipe I think we are getting soft, Keep the game the way it is otherwise you might just as well bring ringette back for boys and girls.

Your ramble becomes incoherent toward the end. A rule that doesn't allow a shorthanded team to clear the puck does what?

• Drives kids out of the game?
  Increases the cost to play?
  Prevents 3-sport athletes?
  Something else?

College coaches didn't like it and cited safety as their main concern. Not sure if it was valid or a way to just keep status quo.

I didn't realize MAHA was considering it, or AHAUS either.
