With a shortened hockey schedule this week and with the Holiday Tournaments starting just after Christmas, I thought we would combine Weeks 6 & 7 into one contest. I've picked out 10 games that are set and which involve AA teams that are currently ranked in the Top 20 and/or A teams that are ranked in the Top 10. If you know of any other first round tournament games that involve such ranked teams that are now scheduled (but are not showing up on the Hockey Hub yet) please post them and they will be added.

Thought I would provide a recap of where things stand with our open contest as of mid-day Tuesday. The polling closes at 6:00 pm this evening and we welcome any and all additional contestants who want to give it a try.

There are 10 contestants so far and, according to the way they've voted on the 11 games, 8 of the games have a heavy favorite against a big underdog (votes totals are either 10-0 or 9-1). However there are 3 games where the vote totals are very close at either 5-5 or 6-4, and therefore I suppose these three can be regarded as toss-ups:

East Grand Forks vs. Crookston (5-5)
Mounds View vs. Elk River/Zimmerman (6-4)
Warroad vs. Blake (6-4)

So it appears that the winner of this two week contest will need to get least two of these three games right plus at least one correct score, probably two correct scores.

Coupla things:

Roseville and Crookston meet in the first round of the Kaposia Classic right before Warroad-Blake, same side of the bracket--according to the rules this game could have been included--too late now of course.

Warroad will be missing Sylvester and the big (actually smaller I think) Marvin for the Kaposia tournament, including the Blake game. I wonder if voters knew this considering the 6-4 Warroad advantage--too late now of course

From past experience I knew we'd miss some very good tournament games, but I was at least hoping we'd capture all of the qualifying first round match-ups. Unfortunately, neither Hockey Hub or Minnesota Sports Online had the Roseville vs. Crookston game listed when I set the schedule. It is probably too late to add this one now as some contestants might not see it. One option would be to add separate polls for each tournament (just try to predict the winner).

Didn't know that, but I happened to pick Blake in my lone real "upset". But with Warroad missing those players, maybe Blake isn't the underdog that I thought they'd be. They do have some very exciting players of their own, plus they have excellent goaltending.

As I get ready to retire for the evening there is still no report on the Roseau vs. Warroad game, but the other three are in and we had a HUGE upset tonight as No. 17-ranked Mounds View upended No. 2 Roseville by a 3-2 score. From the box score it sure looks like the Mustangs came to play - they outshot the Raiders by a 30-17 margin. This comes on the heels of Mounds View having lost their previous three games, to Andover, Hastings and White Bear Lake. So their win over highly regarded and overwhelming favorite Roseville is quite the accomplishment, and they should be congratulated. Needless to say, all 11 of us contestants here got this one wrong!

The other two games tonight went as expected, with BSM rolling over Chisago Lakes 10-2 and Lakeville South shutting out Eastview 5-0. The margin of both of these wins was greater than forecasted so, pending the Roseau-Warroad result, there are no correct scores this evening so far.

Roseville-Crookston should be a good game as well. seen both team this year, and if Roseville takes a day off like they did in Rapids, crookston could very well win this one.

Warroad did beat Roseau by a 4-0 score and everyone picks up a point. Although several predictions on the score were very close, nobody got it exactly right so now our logjam is at 3.

On tap tonight is a single game between White Bear Lake and Stillwater. Ten out of eleven of us have Stillwater coming out on top, but after Roseville went down to Mounds View last night I'm not so sure the consensus will be right on this one either. White Bear is on a 5 game winning streak, including a 5-2 win over Mounds View in their last game. And with a win tonight they can stay even with Roseville at 6-1 in the Suburban East, while Stillwater would fall to 6-2 in the conference.

P.S. Although not in our contest there was another big upset involving a ranked team last night. Unranked Chaska/Chanhassen knocked off #7AA Eden Prairie 3-2. The victors also won the SOG battle by a 31-23 margin, so just like Mounds View they must have just played a really good game. Just goes to show once again that upsets are almost always possible!

On the other hand if you are a player on a team or an avid fan of a team that's "not supposed to win" you are obviously going to feel differently about your chances.

The USA's win over the Soviets is commonly referred to as "The Miracle on Ice". That's another way of saying that it was "the biggest hockey upset of all time".
