With the 11-1 win last night for Mayo, Coach Grosso has tied Ikola for the most wins for a Minnesota high school head coach. His next two chances to pass the record come at home this weekend.

Friday- Hibbing
Saturday- Virginia

Congrats to Grosso and good luck this weekend as he tries to pass Ikola.

Congrats to coach Grosso when it happens. But, with all due respect, Ike did it in 33 years and Lorne is in year 45. I think Willard's 8 state titles will be one record never broken.

DC I agree....big deal....the record isn't broken unless you do it in equal time or less! Grosso isn't in the same field as Ik

Wow, what a bunch of classless dorks! No doubt Ikola was a great coach, but he coached in Edina for cripes sake, he was handed some pretty good players year after year after year! You don't measure a coach by how many wins they got over a period of time, you measure a coach by what they did with the players they were given. That includes not only wins/losses, but development both as hockey players and men!

Agreed, excellent post!
In my mind this does not take anything away from Ikola, but it is a tribute to Grosso's perseverance and dedication in teaching boys how to compete and grow into men. A very impressive milestone to people that care about high school hockey.

Yeah, nice post about Ikola... Good job besmirching his coaching in a "kind" manner.

How about let's hand it to both great coaches. Yea Ike had Edina's program and did it less time but Grosso did it in a smaller program and it took him longer. It probably equals everything out and Grosso now is passing him. Congrats to Grosso now and again when he soon moves ahead.

Never heard of him.

Must be new to hockey or one of those people that call themselves fans of hockey, but only follow the cities teams. Grosso's been around for 45 years and the only coach Mayo has ever had. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and played on the same line as Albert Lea's Nystrom. Just a little background for you.
