I am curious as to what the television history of the boys tournament is. My 1st tourney memory on TV is 1979 and this is what I remember.

1979-1982- KSTP
1983-1991- WCCO
1992-2004- KMSP
2005-Now- KSTC

What I am wondering is does anyone here know when the tournament was 1st televised and who did it?

The 1st tourney I remember watching was that year(1979) and the reason Cosell and other big shots came is because about 2 weeks or so before the tourney KSTP had become the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis and Hubbard wanted to show off his prize LOCAL broadcast jewel.

It was on Channel 11 (WTCN) up until 79, for at least 10-12 years before that. That's as far back as I can remember

I know WTCN had the basketball tourneys since at least 1960 because in last years(2010) program they had a story on the 50th anniversary of Edgerton and there was a picture from a newspaper article and there was a WTCN camera there. So MY GUESS is they had the tourney for a long time before that.

How'd that work? Didn't think electricity was invented until '64.

I remember having to listen to the 1960 tournament (Duluth East won) on the radio. However, we only got two television stations from Duluth at that time. I think the next year (1961) it was on television for the first time.

Got the answer today from Howard Voight of the MSHSL. Tourney started in 1954 on Twin Cities TV. WTCN had rights from 1954-1970. 1971-1978 Twin Cities Federal(lead sponsor) had rights and placed tourney on WTCN(only independent)and for hockey maybe outstate stations for a network. 1979-1982 KSTP had the rights. Rights fees here had program printing costs and ticket costs of 50% included. 1983 WCCO took over and had next 9 tourneys paying over $1 million dollars for 1986-88 and 1988-1991 beating back bids from KITN(WFTC) and KXLI-KXLT(CHannel 41 and 47 together then. 41 is now the Ion affiliate while KXLT has become the Fox station in Rochester as well as WTCN and KMSP. 1992 KMSP took over when the 2 tier/class tourney started. Con tract was extended until 2003 when bids were solicited. KSTC, KMSP and the old Victory Sports submitted bids. After review the 45 bid was accepted starting with 2005 boys hockey tourney.Original contract was through 2015. Contract was extended in 2009 through 2021 which included the webcasting.
