What sections were allowed to send there runner ups into a one game playoff for the tourney when they could do so. I am certain it was 7 and 8 but were the other 2 sections?

From 1949 to 1974 the section 7 and 8 runners-up played to go to the tournament as section 3. Throughout the 1950s section 4 (St. Paul schools) and section 5 (Mpls. schools) runners-up played to go as the section 1 winner. That ended in 1960.

I asked because I remember seeing it here in another fourm a while ago and reading that in 1969 when Warroad made it to state with Henry Boucha they came through the "Back door" after losing to Roseau in the section 8 final.

This is true. The backdoor for regions 7 and 8 existed from 1949-1974 (after which they added private schools and did a significant realignment). The backdoor teams won 4 state titles--Duluth East (1960), Intl Falls (1964), Greenway (1968), and Hibbing (1973).

stpaul (or anyone else), any idea what they did with Section 1 after they ended the backdoor? Because for the rest of the 60s and even into the 70s, several teams (SSP, NSP, Alexander Ramsey, WBL) seem to do a lot of rotation between sections 1 and 2. I'm only going by a year-by-year list of section champions that I have. Was it a backdoor for the entire Metro? I just noticed Richfield appears in both the section 6 and section 1 columns as well...

For a while the loser of Sectoin 7 or 8 went (alternating between years, before they started the play-off systme between 7 & 8).
