section 4a

Lots of good teams in this section may be the section with most depth in class A. Is sta a lock to win the section or will there be an upset?

Two years ago it was a toss up; St Thomas won the first game by 3 then tied the second. The tides had turned and I thought Maht was the favorite in the head to head game, but was lower seeded because of the Cadets' consistency.north*hockey wrote:St. thomas is undoubtedly the favorite... Yet that has been the case the last two sections but good ol mahtomedi has nocked them out. Although this year, even more than the last two, I would be extremely shocked if mahtomedi or even totino/ssp could pull it off. I think it will be interesting either way tho...
I remember Mahto being a pretty big underdog 2 years ago, they actually had to beat SSP who swept them during the season then knocked off STA. Last year I think it was more of a toss up, I think they even had identical records plus the head to head split.HShockeywatcher wrote:Two years ago it was a toss up; St Thomas won the first game by 3 then tied the second. Then last year St Thomas won the first by 3 and lost the 2nd by 3. Maht was definitely the favorite between the two, but again St Thomas was the top seed because Maht had other losses.
This year, I'd say that SSP has a shot based on their close game at St Thomas if they can get by Totino in the semi's, but if Totino can make the finals, it should be an easy run.
Yeah, I was really confused as to why St Thomas got the top seed last year. As you said, the two had identical records; while St Thomas had wins against Hill and Breck that Maht didn't, they ended the season AT St Thomas with a win. Really not sure what was going on there.DubCHAGuy wrote:I remember Mahto being a pretty big underdog 2 years ago, they actually had to beat SSP who swept them during the season then knocked off STA. This year there is a lot of depth in 4A but I think there's a pretty big gap between STA and 2-6. Maybe someone like Mahto can sneak up on them in the semi's and get the benefit of a couple soft goals. They've handled TG and SSP pretty good recently.
i think that you have to put st paul johnson in the 6 spot instead of slp. johnson has the head to head over slp (i believe they won 3-2)HShockeywatcher wrote:Yeah, I was really confused as to why St Thomas got the top seed last year. Ditto. Most of the section games St Thomas isn't in will be very competitive. Just as I said about Hermantown in 5A, I could see St Thomas allowing less than 3 goals in sections. Could possibly see that happening in 1A as well.
With Mahtomedi's recent win over SSP, how do the rankings look now?
St Thomas
Totino
Maht
SSP
Chisago
SLP
2-6 are SO close. I'd have put SSP ahead of Totino before Thursday, but now with Maht ahead of SSP, Totino needs to be ahead of Maht. A case could also be made for Chisago to be at #3 and SLP to be close to them, as both teams lost to Totino by 1, but SLP lost to Maht and SPP, so they couldn't be ahead of them. Without head to head games played, could one game drop SSP from 2 to 6?
Could it go STA, TG, CLA, Maht, SSP, SLP? Guess we'll see.
Does anyone have information on what the coaches who vote usually use seed?
Good call.
