Bring back a ton of seniors and almost all of the scoring. Other top teams in 4A are losing a ton.

Amazing that this program survives........ Should be a great story for next year.

It would be great to see them back at the state tournament, but it might take some things going their way with the section realignment coming up. Maybe if STA opts up and TG gets moved somewhere else. Mahto returns some nice talent but I agree SSP, SLP, Chisago lose quite a bit. Do to Govs have any talent coming up from bantams that will help right away?

Yes, they do have some very good talent at the JV level. Johnson will match up well with any of those teams in sections next year.

I think they bring back their #1 tender in Hoffman........?

Hoffman is listed as a senior now. There are 6 other seniors listed as well which will have an impact. I agree they could be pretty good, but with no experienced goalie in the pipeline, along with the other seniors it could be difficult. I would guess this was the year they were looking to make some noise.

Johnson will match up well with all the teams in the section next year, except for STA and Maht.

That's the STA attitude that helps them get bumped most years.

Looking at the 2009-10 season and what they brought back this year is very small in comparison....... this was a very junior dominated team. Next year they will be loaded with talented seniors.

They have a freshman goalie playing JV as far as I know. Their juniors were their leading scorers this year. I don't know, I have my doubts about ALL Govie teams from this point on.

With that said this next years team could be their last chance ever, but then again, I've said that a couple other times last decade, so...

The freshman goalie's name is Jermaine Jackson....... Does he have anything to do with the Jackson 5 ?

No, but he's black. Not that it really matters, but as far as diversity goes - Johnson being an inner city team and all - they have had few minority players over the years. There were some half latinos around my time not long ago and just after, but I can only think of maybe one African American over the years and he was not on the high (JV or V) as far as I can remember.

Actually, none of the inner city youth squads (Highland, West Side, Harding, Como, etc.) have ever had many, if any, African Americans. Certainly a bit odd since that is were literally all minorities are located in Minnesota.

Thanks for the info............ I would of asked the same question if there was a Ted Nugent or a Hank Williams the llll on the team too.

I recently read that Brett Hull's kid is playing goalie for SPA?. Ya just never know....

Mahtomedi has a very strong junior line ( Jordan, Kegley, May) and goaltender Sawyer Marshall. Not to mention some strong defenseman. They will be a very solid team next year

it would be great to see JHS back in the state even if it's at 1A as they continue to have a good youth system and incredible local support.

I'm not sure how good that Johnson youth program is. They had to merge with Como, so for one it's not even all their own program. Having such low numbers that merging is necessary is never a sign of good health. The sad fact is, if your Dad came from somewhere that didn't have winter sports, you probably won't be playing hockey.

Govie, what kind of a Hockey future does Dickman have after high school? They have him listed (Hockey Hub?) at 6'5" 210 this year as a junior and is also the leading scorer.

I am pretty sure the goalie Travis Kurth was actually a senior, and I heard a rumor that he quit?

It's funny you should ask, because I talked to Dickman Sr. about that because his kid stood out to me at the last game I was at at Phalen this year. He said his kid wants to go to Juniors, and I think if he wants to use his size to his advantage he could actually make it in Juniors. The kid is just huge and he can skate and score.

I was also told by someone else that scouts from USHL have checked Dickman out, which I thought was interesting. I thought he was the most impressive player, but there are a couple other kids who can actually really move coming back next year as well. If they had the best goalie in the state, who knows. If they have SOLID goaltending, who knows. I've always believed in the power of the goaltender, considering EVERY team I ever had (except for Matt Hoffman WAY back in squirts) were sh-T for my Johnson teams. If anyone doubts that a goalie can single-handedly win a game, just look at what Ryan Miller did against Canada last year in their preliminary match at the Vancouver Games, or countless other examples.

As far as the above comments about their youth program, I have to agree, it's not in good health and the merger with Como is a sign of that. The only saving grace for the Govies is Johnson's area does actually have some decent neighborhoods still where people clearly have enough money to put their children throught hockey. At the prices today for icetime and equipment (sticks are $300+!!!) we will see how many more young players they can churn out since the Eastside increasingly gets more encroached upon by the ghettoization crowd. We'll see...

Between them and Como they have two of the best out-door rinks.
