Future improvement or rule change to "Better" HS H

What single change would you like to see to improve HS hockey?

And do not make this a "Private school" rethread!!

I would like to see 20 minute periods. If you can't give them more games just add 9 more minutes to Varsity, keep JV at 17.

Get rid of being able to change off an ice. Seems to me that whenever these kids get into trouble they just send it. Enforcing them to stay on the ice and not be able to get fresh legs out there would change that.

I'd like the icing rules to look more like the college icing rules. If a player from the team that sends it down is gonna be the first to get there than wave it off.

No ties, let's go big or go home, NCAA should do it as well.

I don't like either point here. First off, Icing is only waved off in the NHL not college, unless that rule has been changed. Second, why are trying to change the rules of the game to always help offense. I like offense as much as anybody but I like the fact that you can ice the puck and get fresh players on the ice. Plus a lot of goals are scored from offensive zone faceoffs.

I also wish that HS would follow the college rule of no change on a ice. If your not good enough to break out your zone why should you be able to just dump and get off.

Also, they need to make kids skate. Like in the second rule if the icing team will out hustle you to the puck than wave it off.
Its not about getting more offense, it forces you to be a better player.

That's kinda hard for high school kids when they have class at 8:30 the next day.

I think 5 min penalties for fighting and 1/2 shield masks should be allowed.

NCAA and ACHA now play a hybrid touch up icing rule. It is very similar to the NHL, but instead of a race to the puck, it is a race to the face off dots. If the defending team is there first, it is an icing, if the offensive team is first, it is waved off. The goalie must stay in his crease, any movement that looks like an attempt to play the puck has the icing waved off. I have loved watching it this year at BSU, and it speeds up the game, I would love that in High school.

Also, to the comment about 8:30 classes, these kids are hockey players first, then students...right? :-s

As far as the seeding goes...

I think the first round should be a little more fair and balanced.

I think it should be...

#1 plays #5 team
#2 plays #6 team
#3 plays #7 team
#4 plays #8 team

The number 8 team should not be forced to face the number 1 team in the first round and risk being embarrassed on primetime television. That's not right. We shouldn't be seeing blow out wins like 13-2 in the State Tourney, imho. To me, it automatically indicates that there's an issue with the pairing beyond the usual bigger school/program vs smaller school/underdog

If they redo the sections so that the 8 teams in the tournament truly are the 8 best teams in state, then we wouldn't have to worry about any blow-outs in the tournament. The state tournament should be the cream of the crop..

It doesn't work 1-8, 2-7 etc. It is done via a blind draw.

I'm just saying, when only 4 of the teams in the tournament come from the top 10 (HockeyHub rankings), it's kind of saying something about the potential talent lost in sections. Take Section 6AA for example. Benilde, Wayzata, and Minnetonka all had more talented teams than half the teams in the tournament. Just sayin

Would you care to sort out the section in a logical manner that also spreads out the talented teams? What teams would you put in each section? How would you account for the fact that will change year by year? How would you prevent one of the best teams in the state from being upsetted in the section tournament so a less talented team makes it and gets killed in the first round because they can only get lucky once?

Setting up the sections using geographical measurements is probably the best way to do it. Yeah some of the best teams get left behind but it happens. You can't tell me Eden Prairie didn't benefit from having to play and win 6AA.
Maybe a different alternative would be to have a few at large bids that make the tournament instead.

No need to be bitter, I'm just saying that there has to be a different way of doing this. For the past six or seven years, teams in Section 6AA have gotten screwed and teams like Lakeville North come in with a losing record. It doesn't make sense that can keep happening year after year.

Nah, let a computer do it!

This is the entire problem, isn't it? Knowing who the cream is. Even if you know this ahead of time (because one section doesn't always dominate, how does this adjustment occur?

Me thinks tonkafan just wants his Skippers in 1AA. :P

Ha what team wouldn't?
Benilde and Wayzata both had outstanding seasons and in my opinion, deserved to be in the state tournament. I understand it'd be a huge hassle to redo the sections and all but don't we want the tourney to be filled with teams from the top 10? There shouldn't be any games where you see the brackets and know for sure the outcome of that game.

Nobody is getting screwed. One of the section 6 teams (Wayzata) got beat twice by Moorhead during regular season who was in the tournament and lost 2 and out. Hill got beat by White Bear who took East to overtime. 2 of the best teams in northern minnesota played it out at Amsoil and one went home for the season. The geographic layout makes sense and it accounts for yearly loss of talent. EP will be down next season and Tonka back up and we will not have to hear folks whine about section 6AA.....hopefully.

Why does Edina hop out of the Lake conference area for sections then? Why can't Tonka or Benilde just hop over to a different area after regular season?
