What can you tell me about this tournament and where can someone find the rosters?

Anyone know what date the rosters are released on?

Invites have been extended to the players -- I'm guessing the rosters will be relaeased once everyone accepts.

Based on the Section 2A/2AA roster it looks like every kid asked from Edina and Breck must have declined. Does Giles ignor this tourney? It is surprising to not see one Edina kid involved.

As far as I know coaches don't have a say in the matter, it's the kids decision. Breck didn't have many seniors anyway.

Section 4 and 6 look awfully good. 7 looks deep and 2, 5 and 8 look decent. 1 and 3 don't look too hot. I'm a little surprised to see so many committed players (Bullock, Archibald, Seeler, Hendrickson).

Me too. Hendrickson and Archibald are looking to avoid juniors next season, so this might be another opportunity to prove themselves. Bullock and Seeler will be in juniors regardless, so maybe they're just hoping to increase their NHL draft chances?

As far as I know, the commited players can play in the tournament, but cannot go to the "showcase" at the end of the tourney. There were quite a few commited players.

I could be wrong on this though...

Maybe they just like playing hockey for fun. :-#

I know someone who, as a senior, declined because he didn't want to risk injury for the up and coming baseball season.

I know that Ville Rantanen was suppose to play in the tournament, but because of some IIHF rule he is not eligible.

This event has lost it luster. Most of the good senior moved to juniors or are on spring break. Section 1 has a couple of questionable players on the roster.

I realize that, but you'd think they would be playing Juniors somewhere. And the risk of injuries is always there. I went to watch the great 8 way back in 2003. It was great hockey. However, you could tell which kids wanted to be there and had something to prove. As well as the kids who treated it as a scrimmage. A lot of college coaches fill out there rosters with some of these kids. The year I went, Garrett Raboin earned himself a scholarship offer from SCSU. Good for the scholarship kids who want to play, but they're also taking away roster spots from others who're trying to showcase their skills. Tough decision. Most years one, maybe two DI kids will play.

well section 1 isn't a good section.

look at section 6,2,4's rosters and tell me its not a high end tournament.

I've talked to a lot of scouts and most will not be attending. D3 schools will be the NAHL playoffs and Most D1 USHL . Tournament has lost a lot of luster.

How can you say that after looking at the rosters

Getemupscout you sound sour cause im guessing by reading your posts you follow section one and yes they may have lost some luster but that doesn't mean the whole tournament has. There are some good players in this tourney again and another good opportunity for the kids to show themselves one last time as seniors.[/quote]

I know of Heinonen and Vatnsdal from Delano declined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the process is that a player needs to go through his high school coach first in order to get nominated and then the section GM/coaches decide who they want to extend an invitation to.

Sect. 7 looks tough. I'm picking 7 to win it.

Coverage of Great 8

I wil be over at Wakota since it is just down the hill from my house to get some offline video coverage of the games. These will be uploaded to watch within 24 hours.

Waggs from MyFoxHockey is doing the quarters, semis, and finals of the tourney. He will be on Rink 1 and I will take video from Rink 2 the first day and possibly some from the remaining days which will be the consolation bracket side.

FYI I do not plan on having any play by play just audio of goal calls if we can hear the PA Announcers as sometimes they sound like the speaker from Charlie Browns cartoons. The old voice needs a break after so many hockey games this past month!

So check the site for footage of games over the weekend!

UM-Lucia, SCSU-Motzko, MSU-Jutting, CC-Owens, BSU-Serratore, Butters-WI, UMD-?, M. Tech-?

Tons of NAHL and several USHL

Saw several NHL guys

I’m sure there were others I missed as I did not stay for the later games

Interesting there are so many D1 “head coaches” attending a tournament that you said has “lost its luster”
