I recently heard that Richfield won't have a girls high school team this year. Does anybody know what the options are for the few girls who remain? Will they be able to join another program (co-op)?

I would assume that it is too late for any of the girls to go to another HS program. Try-outs are over and most teams have already had scrimmages. Some will even begin play this week.

U-19 in Edina would make the most sense.

Sad situation for those girls and their families.

Someone has to be held accountable for this error in judgement.

What a shame for the Girls! Hope they find someplace to play!

I know little about the situation but it looks like poor planning to me.

Horrible situation to be in as a player...

can't transfer!
can't get a waiver to play elsewhere!
Senior season down the toilet!

Not the biggest concern but the teams of the Classic Suburban (and non-conference) will now have to try and find another game to add. Good Luck!

If they had planned it properly maybe they could have done a co-op with Bloomington Kennedy, which Richfield borders. Kennedy won just one game last year so you would think a Kennedy/Richfield co-op would have made sense.

Wouldn't Kennedy have to merge with Jefferson first? Not sure that the Bloomington school district would allow this kind of merger, although it does make a lot of sense.

You are probably right, but too bad as two programs that have really struggled would have been more competitive if they had been able to combine into one team. Plus, how ever many Richfield girls there were would have had an opportunity to still play high school hockey, whether it be varsity or JV.

Why are they not fielding a team? When did they decide to not field a team? Not from the metro area, background please.

They made the decision yesterday (11/8). From what I am hearing they did not have enough girls for 2 lines and there goalie was new to hockey.

Not sure if the coach or the AD made the final decision.

I read in the paper this AM that the MSHSL Board approved a co-op with Holy Angels at their mtg yesterday.

I assume - and hope - that this means starting immediately so that those girls that are left without a place to play are no longer in that scenario.

If immediate - congrats to the MSHSL for doing the right thing in a difficult situation.

And, are they able to join the team now? Teams, if that includes JV? Or, did they already scatter in the wind?

I like the solution as both teams needed help. Unfortunately, I think we've heard, there aren't a lot of girls in the Richfield Youth Hockey Association pipeline.

This is an interesting point... MSHSL does have some sort of rule about needing to be on the team a certain # of weeks into the season, so, If they are indeed eligible because of the co-op - then I'd hope someone looked into the other aspect of actually joining at this point in the season.

The ugly part is how do you handle this as AHA? Have a new tryout?

It was for this year. I don't know how many girls "tried out" for HA but they kept one player.

I'm glad to hear that this was done - even if it kept only one player in the game. Congrats to the MSHSL, Richfield, and especially AHA for making this happen. Probably one of the best "common sense" moves that didn't get blocked by some admin BS - it's truly great to see.

I'll be interested to see if we have more co-ops like this long term. Some conferences have rules against them, but I think some teams are thinning out - losing JVs (or very close to it) - etc. Obvioulsy this impacts the smaller schools and those less affluent areas more with fewer players participating and more economic considerations of such an expensive sport being issues.

AHA is 741 and Richfield is 928 for a total of 1669. 2AA for this year was 1275 and above. Won't know next year's cutoff until next year but it looks loike the co-op will be 2AA.
