BSM leaving North Suburban Conference to play independent schedule next season ...

Just for hockey? If that's the case, that makes sense for both them and everyone in their conference except Totino. If it's for all sports, though, that wouldn't make much sense at all.

It is in boys hockey only. Could we see a new conference coming soon?

I believe you will see all the top players return next year now that they can make their own schedule. I would not be surprised in the near future it you see BSM change to a national schedule like Shattuck. Just my guess but I could see that happen.

I doubt it. BSM is like most other schools. They draw from the metro. SSM is not like most schools. It's a completely different format. It's like going to college. It could happen, but I doubt BSM would do that, especially since they've never won state.

You don't think that drawing top players from metro would work? You do not have to have to have a boarding school to make it work. Sure you are not going to get anyone players that cant deive to and from each day but u don't need to. Why wouldn't you want to develope a hockey program where kids can play more than 25 games? Let's face a lot of players leave early and play junior to play more competitive games. Going independent is huge but its still 25 games.

I could see it. Add Tonka, Wayzata, EP, Hopkins, Holy Family. Play SMM and a handful of MN private schools and schedule 10-15 home/away games against powers from the East. Why not?

"The Red Knights went 75-4-2 in seven seasons of conference games. They outscored teams 96-6 in 10 conference games this season."

Exactly what AHA was doing minus the Missota schedule. Gives the players exposure and experience they wouldn't get elsewhere. That being said, with the new travel restrictions, they would be limited in their away games.

Travel question; could teams agree to play at a neutral site that complies with the rules?

I'm pretty sure the MSHSL mileage restrictions only apply to out of state games. In state, you can go from La Crescent to Kittson Central... if you wanted to

Right, but BSM couldn't play in MA. Could they find a venue in, say, Indiana or Illinois to play a MA team? Silly rule, but why not make the best of it?

 at all this talk. The only East they'll play is Duluth East.

They get to make their own schedule rather than playing cupcakes in the N Suburban. What more is there to figure out?

Shattuck started the hockey program to bolster sagging attendance in the 90's
Benilde turns kids away each year. I think they just want to schedule tougher competition for the hockey team during the MSHSL season

Do state tiles in '99 and '01 not count because they are class A? :D

This is a bit far-fetched, considering that they'd have to jump from the MSHSL to USA Hockey (could they even do that in just one sport?) and get all the approval$$$ that would require. There's probably a reason why Shattuck is the only tier 1 AAA program in the state.

Is the game limitation a drag? Yes and no. Most every self-respecting member of this board likes to claim that MN high school hockey is as good as hockey anywhere else.

Could it be that the game limitation (and the prescribed ratio of practices to games) at youth and high school level here actually make us better than those tier 1 teams that play 60 games in the year and have maybe 20 practices?

For the record, I believe Breck just tied SSM the other day.

Leaving the MSHSL is an interesting idea, but I doubt whether BSM kids are so arrogant that they'd gladly forgo any hopes of a state title. Their coach and many of their fans are another story, though, of course.

I'll guess it's simply to improve the competitiveness of their schedule similar to what Duluth East has done. Duluth East is also an independent. They won't have to travel like DE does but you can add that home and away to the schedule right now. Their opponents in Section 6AA prepare for section playoffs with a much tougher schedule which hurts Benilde in section playoffs. They probably feel they can develop a tougher schedule which will help the team get to a higher level of play which will help in the 6AA Section Tourney.

The players will be upset about no more all conference awards for their letter jackets.

Why would they?

Conventional wisdom is that BSM is toughening up its 25-game regular season schedule in order to better prepare them for a successful run in the 6AA Section Tournament. H-M doesn't need to do this, since their section competition isn't any stronger than their conference opponents (swap out STA with WBL). Of course, that doesn't always translate into an automatic trip downtown come March... :D

If it's better competition they want, why doesn't BSM just go all-in and join the Lake Conference? Are their other sports teams more evenly matched in the North Suburban?

In a word; yes. But I do agree the Lake would be a good fit for them for the big 3 sports.; good football/basketball programs. Not sure about others though.

Besides hockey, they would compete well in boys and girls soccer, plus basketball in some years, but not much else, especially football where they would get killed.

yah I always thought the lake conference would be great for a school at BSM. but reality is that they arent big enough.

250 senior class to all the other classic lakes of 500+.

but this 2012 class could easily be in classic lake. but idk about the next classes for BSM

boys basketball-beat hopkins, tonka, EP
girls bball-beat tonka
girls soccer-???
boys soccer-beat tonka but 5+, tied ep?
girls hockey-1-1 vs tonka, beat wayzata, beat hopkins
baseball-always competive vs classic lake besides EP
lacrosse-havent lost a game in a couple years besides blake

but sports like FOOTBALL,volleyball, softball, girls lacrosse would get absolutely drilled

Just think how much revenue a school like bsm would make a year from classic lake-Just football along from opposing teams coming to their stadium, scores might be lopsided but so would money made too.
