In in regard to the 12UB-tournament, I agree that Moose Lake should have gone A. I believe they have at least 3 girls who played in the MN Select tournament last spring (two different age groups). Beating Duluth, Proctor/Hermantown, and Ashland WI multiple times by double-digits this past season was a waste of both teams time. We will see if Centennial, Edina or Red Wing have the strength to stop them.

Agree with you lace, have not seen them play, or Edina. Will be good tournament, But also saw that Centennial has beaten both Northfield and Redwing...they might be the team to watch..pretty solid team. Not a one player team like Northfield or Redwing....Good luck to all the girls.

I love the double-edged sword the small out-state communities have to live by. If they play A and lose, then there is no end of complaining by the bigger programs about how they waste their time with these insignificant little programs that should be playing B hockey. If they play B and win, then there is no end of complaining by the bigger programs about how these associations with no A teams should not be allowed to beat our B teams.

Inigo, I don't believe there was any complaining, and there certainly was no complaining "by the bigger programs about how these associations with no A teams should not be allowed to beat our B teams". It was pure observation and knowledge of the situation. Hindsight is always 20-20.... that's why it's interesting to come out here and discuss it. Don't turn this into something that it's not. I think any of the other 7 teams in the tournament would welcome the chance to knock this powerful #1 ranked and undefeated team off the top. Good luck to all teams, and have fun girls!

I agree that Moose Lake should have gone A.
This is editorialization, not observation. As for the complaining, I guess we'll see...

If Moose Lake wins the tournament, but the games are competitive in nature, there should be NO "complaints" by anyone. However, if they kill everyone 7, 8, or 12-0 in the state tournament, I guess that could open the door for others - but you’ll not hear anything further from me. I stated my opinion, and we’ll see if I’m right or wrong. Back to the predictions! Any opinions on the A-side???

Games will be fine, stop complaining about small associations not playing A. They do not have the numbers to compete at A and if they select B that is fine. Moose Lake only beat an Edina team by the score of 2-1, and this same Edina team beat Northfield twice. And their record shows they split with the Edina team that is in the State. They did not qualify for regions getting knocked out by this same Edina team in State. So based on the scores, I would not consider Moose Lake a lock anything can happen. This is B hockey and should be a great tournament.
Red Wing will be the Champion.

Wasn't that the same Norhfield team that beat Red Wing three times this year? So based on scores.............
All kidding aside, Moose Lake looks to be the team to beat. The rest of the field will be pretty even, which will lead to some fun games. Centennial and Edina have overall strong rosters (deep). Red Wing and Northfield have two real strong players in 9 and 14. Stopping those two is key. Burnsville is also solid and finished the year strong. Don't know much about the other teams. Sorry.
Should be a fun tournament. Good luck to all.

I guess I am a little curious about Burnsville. Why don't they have an A team for what I would consider a larger association? I have watched them play and they are a B team, so I am NOT saying they should have played an A schedule. They are a good B team.
Just interested to see if there is a story to it. Girls playing PW? Defections to other associations? Just a lack of girls in the association at this age group?
I wish them well at State.

I think it was a combination of the factors you mentioned. The team has 14 skaters and 1 goalie, so the numbers weren't there for two teams. Two of the 4 girls who were on the 12A team last year switched over and played peewees and made the B1 team. My recollection is that this group struggled 2 years ago at 10A, when several girls were pulled up from 8U's to fill out the B team. I agree that 12B was a good fit for this group, especially in D6, as evidenced by the fact that 12 of their 16 league games were decided by 2 goals or less.

Numbers in Burnsville have been declining for a while. I remember 3 years ago the 12A team went to state (knocking out Eden Prairie to do so) and they also had a 12B team. The same group now has to coop with Chaska/Chanhassen to have a 14A team.

Recruiting valleys can cost associations for years. Recruiting committees can't take their eye off the ball for a single season or that valley will cost them for 6-8 years. Hopefully, Burnsville is back working a solid recruiting plan.
You can't change the number of 14 year olds in your association but you sure can change the number of 5 year olds.

I thought the U12B tournament was very good this year. It went pretty close to expected, but it was a lot closer all around as far as competition is concerned. The top six teams were all good, and for the most part, could beat each other with no real weak team in the group. Congrats to ML, the best U12B, but not by as much as expected. They are good, but not an A team at all. The goalie play was strong with Burnsville, Edina, and RW goalies standing out in my opinion.
I was good to see the "team" talent with very few teams relying on one player. Not completely surprising was that 9 and 14 from RW and Northfield really stood out to me. Both were really the only consistent scoring chances for each team all year and you can tell they are fine players. It is funny how both account for a large portion of their teams offense, both are strong skaters, and both are the main focus of ALL five opponents on the ice, yet one girl draws 3-4 penalties a game and the other girl one all tournament. 9 for RW is great skater (and player), but apparently nobody can touch her. I swear I saw her draw 10-12 tripping penalties this weekend and dove twice that many times. The diving was over the top in my mind. Ask North Metro and Centennial. 14 Northfield plays the same end to end game, takes a beating, refuses to go down, and drew one penalty all tournament. Her coach needs to teach her to fall down a few times. I thought the on ice officiating was terrible. Way too many weak penalties.
Sorry for the rant. I am glad my small town teams did well. This was a real competitive tournament. Congrats to all teams and ML for the championship. Well done by all girls.

Appears the tourney was a success, even competition throughout and Moose Lake was pushed with 3 one goal games. Congrats to them and all the other girls.
Purple, how was your Northfield squad? I was a little surprised they dropped the first game like they did.

Congrats to both 12A Edina and 12B Moose Lake on their titles. Well deserved! But especially to Moose Lake after what #2 had to go through over the last 9-12 months - what a strong kid, and what a strong team with their support of each other! They’re champions on and off the ice with their ability and sportsmanship. I agree with Purple.... it's always good to see close games - the best of the best battling it out. For all these teams, to get to the final 8 means you had a GREAT season, and no one can take that away from you.
