This article was just posted on the hub. Not sure how many of you have heard of this and was wondering how you feel about it? I think it'll be a great thing to do and would be really interesting!

I think it's great! That said, I'm not crazy about wood sticks. A low-priced composite seems cheaper to me because they last longer than wood.

Not all composite sticks are $200-250.

What a great idea. Credit to the kids for buying into it.

This is a fantastic idea. With any luck, USA Hockey and other organizations with a vested interest in the long-term viability of the sport will sit up and take notice.

In the shorter term, it'd make perfect sense for the outdoor HDM games to be played using wooden sticks. Talk about old-school hockey...

Wow, I guess a decade away from playing is too much. Is it seriously old school to use wood sticks? Guess I need to pull my head out. Wow.
That said , I like the bigger part of the story, christians idea. Very true that the number one reason people will bring up as to why their kids are not in hockey is cost.

Really good idea. Do the same thing with baseball bats. Make it so all kids, from HS on down have to use wood. Revives a faded Minnesota industry, keeps more money in parents' pockets, and puts all kids on the same level sheet of ice.

Welcome to the old-fogey's club, defense. The switch from wood to composite was quick, pervasive, and recent...from my perspective, the tipping point was reached 4 - 5 years ago.

Really good idea. Do the same thing with baseball bats. Make it so all kids, from HS on down have to use wood.

If cost is an issue, then kids should stick to aluminum bats. They are more durable than wooden bats (opposite of hockey sticks), and they can also be shared (i.e. youth programs can provide each team with 2 or 3 bats). But I'd argue that kids should be playing lacrosse in the spring, so it's a moot point.

You are correct,$250- $275 is crazy and the damn things don't last.
Bought 3 to start the season, all those gone, bought 3 more hoping to make if to the end. Problem is buy 3 in Jan and go till mid Feb then it breaks your past the 30 day return policy, one stick has 60 days now??
Just sending one back for warranty.
If all teams,kids had to play with wood sticks and mentioned above like baseball bats,order different one in multiples and should be able to interchange easily??
The price thing has gone crazy thats for sure.

I won't be able to make it to the game, but if anyone here will be there, I'd be interested in seeing if an unusually large amount of sticks are broken throughout the span of the game?

I LOVE wood sticks.........you can get a nice hook on them using the stove

Here's a good place to start to cut the cost of Hockey....

Stick rule:

Mini's-Mites, $25 max cost per stick, wood/fiberglass ONLY.
Squirt-PeeWee, $50 max cost per stick, wood/fiberglass ONLY.
Bantam, no material restriction, 550 grams min. weight, $75 max cost per stick.
High School, no material restriction, 475 grams min. weight, $125 max cost per stick...

The kicker... these ALL have to be manufactured in North America! No more Mexican or Chinese manufacured products.

And DON'T even get me started on skates... Without someone finally stepping up and putting an end to the insanity... YOU WILL SEE $1000 skates (regularly) in a short amount of time.

I'm NOT a fan of some of the things USA Hockey's done the past few years... but here's their calling!!!! HELP save the sport from being priced to death by Corporate America(China)... It's time to have Weight, Size, Material, and Price sanctions on ALL equipment in the sport.

note to my fellow buyers....never buy more than two at a time...as soon as the first one approaches 30 days have your kid BRAKE it, start with the second and hope like hell it lasts till the next one shows up. Repeat over and over and always use the newest stick. The original second stick stays the back up as long as possible. Easton, Bauer and CCM expect to replace every stick, as buyers we should feel obligated to take them up on it. Oh...the back up to the back up should be wood!

Thats kind of my point, the marketing strategy assumes every stick will be replaced, if its not, its just gravy for the manufacturers. The price is set assuming each sale = 2 sticks.

We played in Roseau last year and stopped by the former stick mfg once located up the road........kids bought some "old school wood sticks" and were going to use them in their next game......needless to say at least 2 didn't make it through warmups and I believe another 2-3 didn't make it through the game....

I for one like the "new technology" in hockey equipment.

I still use a Sherwood 5030 for coaching. My son uses a Sherwood 5030 as well. He's the only kid on his team that uses a wood stick. He won't switch even though I have offered. Wood sticks have more "feel" to them and I think should be used by all youngsters learning to play the game.

I have an Easton composite that I also use for coaching/pickup games. I think I might have a little better shot power with the composite, but not much. Feel-wise though, it's not even close. Wood stick hands down.

Glad to hear about this event and a movement back to wood sticks.

Problem with traditional wood bats is that they don't last two innings in even the 40+ leagues.

But they're now making bats out of some kind of bamboo laminate..."Wood" bat without the breakage issues.
