He wasn't much of a factor offensively, but defensively he was excellent. Virginia had tons of pp time and their goals were 5 on 3, 5 on 4, and a prayer shot from the blueline that the goalie couldn't see. The outcome of this game was never in doubt and if Hibbing would have needed offense from him, he would have been more aggressive. The one assist was an end-to-end rush in which he set up Birdsall beautifully.

I'm not questioning his ability or his talent. I've seen it. I am questioning the decision to put him on defense and throw him out there for 5-6 minute shifts. Better teams will eat him up at the end of those shifts.

I disagree with you that the outcome was never in doubt. Virginia led 2-1 after one and it was a one goal game with a few minutes left in the second period. I'm not saying they would've won, but I do think Virginia would have had a better chance if Murray would have played in goal (out with an eye injury). There were a couple of soft goals in there for Hibbing in the second period. Three of them never even made it to the back of the net. That flutter-bug third Virginia goal was bad too, there was no screen.

Judnick fanned on an open net 3 different times in this game. If he connects on a couple of those and the goalie stops a couple of those tricklers, its a different game. (Ya, I know, woulda, coulda, shoulda... just making the point that the game was closer than you made it out to be). Of course, Hibbing was shooting themselves in the foot quite a bit with dumb penalties (mainly by the same player).

I agree that Hibbing will pay for Johnson's extended shifts against a Denfeld or Marshall, but I stand by my claim that the game was never in doubt. Hibbing dominated 5 on 5 play and Virginia's only even strength goal was that blueline floater. Hibbing had one soft goal, but the others were Bluejacket forwards consistently beating the defensemen and getting to the net first. And a fantastic tic-tac-toe goal to boot.

Yes, Virginia had an early lead after the 5 on 3 and then came back within one in the second, but Hibbing was outplaying them enough that it was just a matter of time before they put it away, which they did. Virginia's goalie was giving no indication that he was about to steal one, thus at no time did I think that Hibbing wouldn't retake the lead.

I give Virginia credit for getting under Bestul's skin; they got him to take 3 very unnecessary retaliation penalties. It was a good strategy and it got them plenty of pp time and made this game closer than it could have been.

Bottom line is that when I watch Hibbing-Virginia I feel like I am watching Hibbing-Grand Rapids, except vs Rapids it is my team that is a significant step below. In the last Hib-GR game, it was 3-2 GR with shots 19-18 midway through the game, but the game was never in doubt, it was only a matter of time before Rapids' superior talent took over.

I'm not trying to disrespect Virginia, it's just the way I saw it. For what it's worth, I highly doubt either of our teams will be in St. Paul this year, given they would both have to pull two upsets to get there.

I agree that Hibbing is probably the better team overall and I know what you're saying about the eventuality of the outcome. However, I started to get that feeling like I used to get when Virginia had struggled with Greenway in past years (with the exception that Virginia is a much better team than those Greenway teams). You let them hang around long enough and a bounce here, a break there, and your in trouble. When Virginia got that 3rd goal and then nearly tied it a couple shifts later, I thought that may be what's in store. Although I should know better by now... Virginia has hung around with quite a few good teams this year (Warroad, Little Falls, Denfeld, Cloquet, and Mahtomedi to name a few) but has failed to cash in a "W" in any of them. Unfortunately, your right, though -- We probably won't see either of these teams in St. Paul this year.

I watched it on local TV and wouldn't say Denfeld handed ti East. More like Thompson played stellar to make about 50 saves and they held on. Then I watched him live last night saving 51 more against Rapids. The major difference between the two nights for Denfeld... last night they couldn't find a way to put the puck in the net.
