What do you think?
Thursday Morning: Class AA
Game #1 If the score is still tied after the third overtime period, the game will be called and continued on Friday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continued as outlined above until the tie is broken.
Game #2 If the score is still tied after the third overtime period and it is after 5:00 p.m., the game will be called and continued on Friday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. or following the previous game if Game #1 had ended in a tie. ONLY ONE (1) OVERTIME PERIOD WILL BE PLAYED AFTER 5:00 P.M. IN GAME #2.
If the score is still tied after the overtime period, the game will be called and continued on Friday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continued as outlined above until the tie is broken.
Thursday Evening: Class AA
Game #1 If the score is still tied after the third overtime period, the game will be called and continued on Friday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. or following the previous game if Game #1 or Game #2 had ended in a tie.
Game #2 This game will be played until completion.

Is this a suggestion or an actual rules change?

To my recollection, this has been the case for many years. It's just been fortunate that all the long-OT games lately, East/AV in '96 (5OT), Tonka/Hill in '10 (4OT) have been the last game of the evening.
In fact, I was just watching Ice Dreams on FSN, and they we talking of an old game (I cannot recall which teams) had to stop and play the next morning.

That was the 1985 quarterfinal between Jefferson and Minnetonka. As I recall, it was stopped after three OT, and Jefferson won it in the fourth OT the next morning.

I don't think this is new, as other posters before have stated. I think this has been the same for awhile and we have never come across a situation where these rules have actually had to be enforced. Not recently, anyway.

Yes, and it is under "Tournament Related Files". This is nothing NEW. As Lee has stated, this has been the rule since at least 1985. The only thing that has been updated is the time of periods - 8 and 17 (vs 7 and 15 before).

Certainly is interesting. My quick check I only have seen 2 OT games in either class for the Quarter-finals that have gone more than one overtime in the 2000s. Edina/Hill-Murray in 2000 and East/White Bear in 2011. Both finished in the second OT.

Guess I just had never seen it put in place, so I though it was new.

Does anybody remember around what time the Duluth East-White Bear Lake game Thursday afternoon in 2011 ended? Was that in any danger of getting to the time limit for it to be suspended until the next day?

4:30ish? Maybe even a little later. After the game I just got straight in line for tickets for the evening session. I was near the front of the line and didn't have to wait long at all.

I thought that Edina-HM game went three OTs.
