I realize these are very difficult times for the newspaper industry, and in all honesty we should be glad the paper's even still publishing and covering high school sports, but good lord, if you can't even get a player's position right, why are you even bothering to name an all-star team? Now Jake Jackson's a defenseman? And it's not just a typo; in the summary they call him "one of Minnesota's best defensemen." The Pioneer Press did the same thing with Jay Dickman last year. This is just profoundly embarrassing (no knock on Jackson is intended, as he is by all accounts a good kid and a promising player).

I'll at least give the STrib credit in that they actually appear to try on high school coverage.

Pioneer Press doesn't give a single f*** about it.

No Novak? What gives? I know it can't be an all STA team, but......

My guess is Mr Leighton was a basketball player for the Pioneers in his high school days.

Instead of the usual All Metro Team, they now limit it to an All East Metro team. But they add a couple of Wisconin kids instead of West Metro kids. Is River Falls and Hudson closer than MPLS?

River Falls and Hudson are certainly more within PP's targeted circulation area.

It's been a long, steep slide for that paper from the days when it won a Pulitzer for breaking the Gopher tutoring scandal. Getting named to this list will be something nice for these kids to add to their senior graduation posters or NCAA media guide bios; otherwise, it's hard for me to think the selections serve any more useful purpose.

St. Croix and Pierce counties are apart of the Twin Cities Metro Area, according to the census.

Pioneer Press does have a Wisconsin edition if I'm not mistaken as well.

Congrats to Lavalle. A great HS hockey player and what the HS experience is all about. 3 sport athlete, stuck around through his sr year. Hopefully he gets some offers too. A lot of teams leaving a great all around player on the table.

I think the first article about boys high school hockey this season was last week when they had preview of SECTION 1AA TITLE GAME BETWEEN THE LAKEVILLES!!! TWO SUB .500 TEAMS!!! Really???

He can also act and dance. Lavalle was Eugene in Hill-Murray's production of Grease the past 2 weeks. Ryan Black played Johnny Casino and sang as well. It was an outstanding show and they had sellouts both weekends. HM is certainly not just a hockey school. They have a tradition of great theatre productions that go back to the 60s too. More proof that HM hockey may attract top players but once there they become a part of a great school community.

Lavalle as Pioneer Press player of the year. Wow.. If you talk to Hill insiders he's not even the most talented kid on the team. There's a reason a number of the juniors mentioned have scholarships already and Lavalle is sitting there with no ride.. He just doesn't project out either... I agree that the StarTrib does an infinitely better job at high school hockey coverage and this just proves it..

Don't get me wrong, I think Lavalle is a good kid, a great student and there's something to be said about a 3 sport athlete, but he's not the most talented East Metro Player.

Congratulations to Hill-Murray's Zach LaValle for being named the Pioneer Press male high school athlete of the year. Looks like he plans to play for Chicago in the USHL next year. I think he has paid a price for staying in HS 4 yrs and playing football. I do bet it will only be one year and he will be a D1 college player by next year. It appears that he made the most of his senior year in high school and had great experiences. I know Hill-Murray families appreciate him.

Zach is a great kid & had an amazing high school run. Unfortunately, I wonder if his best days are behind him. He was the BMOC at HM and a media darling, but he will now be just another kid playing Junior hockey. It will be interesting to see how he handles it all. I would not be surprised if he got a D1 offer down the road, nor would I be surprised to see him return home and play D3 hockey. I wish him nothing but the best!

I see you have been working on your backhander.
