Edina at Elk River

Any thoughts? Thinking 5-2 Edina, will be closer only if ER goalie stands on his head. Edina's high end talent will be tough for most teams to overcome and it is ER's first game.

Can't argue. But the ER goalie has been stymieing these Edina kids all through youth hockey and spent the fall playing with some of the top Edina players. I bet he's motivated to do what he needs to.

The game is at Elk River; Edina lacks discipline and will draw lots of penalties; and the Hornets are cocky and are prime to get beat. Prediction: Elk River - 3; Edina - 1.

Elk River - 3; Edina - 1. Just as I said. I rest my case, although the outcome was a matter of the ELks outhustling the Hornets, playing a smart, opportunistic game, and second-year coach, Gordie Roberts, outcoaching his former North Stars teammate, Curt Giles, rather than Edina taking a lot of penalties like I expected.

Westsidestory with the call, nailing the 3-1 final. Game was very even, final shots were 46-36 in favor of ER. Edina goalie gave up lot's of rebounds and second chances. Very few penalties. Edina looks like a deeper team than ER but ER had the best goalie on the ice tonight. Nice win for ER to open the season.

You're right. On the surface, the game was very even in so far as both teams' goalies stood on their heads making critical saves and the final shots were reasonably close. The difference I saw is that the Elk River's goalie, Mac Berglove, gave up fewer rebounds and, when he did, his teammates were there to clear the puck, while Edina's goalie, Andrew Rohkohl, had less defensive support. Also, kudos to Elk River for keeping the offensive pressure up in the third period, outshooting Edina 18-8 and scoring the only goal in the period. The Elks played smart, but didn't go into a defensive shell, as many teams might have done to preserve a one-goal lead.

According to hockey hub Kobi Boe was in net for Edina instead of Rohkohl.

It was nice to see the Elks set up shot after shot on their lone power play as Edina has been insanely aggressive on penalty kills. They actually forced Edina to fall back and play more defensively. Also props to ER for killing off Edina's PP's (Hub says 2, but I swear there were 3). Berglove was one key to the Elks' win and he came through in a big way.
Two of ER's goals came from their second line but their first line looked really good. Expect many points from the likes of Jaremko, Zerban and Springman.
Edina is still easily one of the deepest teams around and Rohkohl is a talented goalie, so it'll be interesting to see the rematch at the Edina Classic in a couple weeks.

This was the best game I've seen yet this year. The fans were invested, in an almost wholly positive way (which we don't often see.) Looking forward to the rematch.
