Anyone getting anything on the 11 January outdoor games at TCF? If there's already a post with this..sorry didn't see it

There is a rumor circulating that there will be a few high school games played earlier in the day leading up to the Gopher Womens game.

It appears Minnetonka and Benilde-St. Margaret's will play at TCF.

Yes. The hockey city classic is so much more appealing than HDM.

Largely depends on whether FSN broadcasts any of these games. The Eagan game was announced as being part of the "High School Hockey Face-off" so there might be some event planning/marketing going on.

One thing to note is that these games are on Sat Jan 11. The "real" Hockey City Classic games are the following Friday, on the 17th, and HDM at Elk River is on the 18th. FSN is broadcasting the Wild home game against Colorado on the 11th at 7pm, so that rules out televising the 8pm game between Eagan and EV, at least.

It will diminish some of the HDM luster, there are so many outdoor games now at all levels, including to many at the NHL level that the novelty will wear off soon. The bottom line is the great job FSN does with the HDM event, the venue is historic and the work the people of Elk River have done will make it a success. Lot's of tickets have been sold and there will be games all week with ERYHA games, both Rogers boy's and girls are playing and I think a junior hockey game. FSN is excited about the venue, it is a unique place and there will be a big crowd.

Why would FSN broadcast an event that is in competition with their signature winter event?

Flooding the market (pun intended) with more outdoor games certainly takes luster from Hockey Day MN but there also isn't tremendous draw in the 6 teams they scurried to get. Word is Lechner said no thanks to the offer and recall hearing buzz about Edina declining the HDM invite months ago. Perhaps there's a connection to the good coach thread where certain coaches don't grasp for any publicity they can get.

So, if they don't broadcast, then it won't "diminish" HDM at Elk River very much at all.

When the same promoters who are doing the "Classic" did something similar at Soldier Field last season, they also put together a line-up of 3 high school games, and advertised it this way: http://www.soldierfield.net/content/hig ... ey-faceoff. If they keep the price of admission at $7, that's a whole lot cheaper than watching games the next weekend at The Pit. But I doubt that many people will decide not to attend HDM now that these games have been announced at TCF, based solely on price.

It would be a shame if any coach turns down the invitation to play in an outdoor game, for fear that they might appear to be grasping for publicity. It's not about the coaches, it's about the kids. And whether it's at TCF or at Handke Pit, it's going to be a memorable event for the players.

It is about the kids, Rumor was Giles wasn't interested in an "exhibition game". The Edina kids would have loved it.
How many casual hockey fans go to HDM? The teams involved in HDM will support it, there has been a big outpouring of sponsors from all teams involved. There is a Friday night banquet, and game day will be like a hockey carnival. The VIP tent tickets are rumored to be sold out and regular ticket sales are brisk. The Pit is also in close proximity to downtown bars.
FSN calls all the shots related to HDM from teams to venue setup.

Tickets are $12 general admission for all 5 games ($10 if you buy in advance from one of the high schools). Heckuva deal (especially if you can get re-entry on a single ticket, and warm up for an hour or three at your favorite Stadium Village establishment)

There was a day when the outdoor game was the norm. Back when the poor man's kid had the same chance of being a hockey player as the rich man's kid.

Couldn't agree more Elliott. I didn't skate inside on a regular basis until I was a bantam. My first 8 years of hockey were all outside. And now? I think kids enjoy playing outside for fun but there simply isn't any time. Us dads have made sure any spare time is filled with some other kind of training.

And whoever made the comment about the Jan 11 event will be an event the kids will never forget. AGREED! What a great venue. I don't think the organizers put this together with large crowds in mind. I am guessing it's more of a test of the facility in preparation for the following weekend more than anything else. Either way, to be able to tell their grandkids that they played in the first ever high school hockey weekend at The Bank will be something special they will always carry with them.
