Duluth East (5-2) vs. Hill-Murray (7-0)

They haven't met since 12/29/09. They played a 9 year series from 1995-2003. HM is 13-6-1 all time vs. DE including the 1991 State Final. This should be a good one. Ridder is a great venue for HS Hockey.

Got a feeling the Hounds are gonna pull the upset.

Fun fact: Hill is the only team with a record more than two games over .500 against East during the Randolph era.

Also, they did meet in the 2010 State Tourney.

As for 2013, Hill has more depth, so East will probably have to withstand a few barrages. We'll see how Randolph manages his top players' playing time in this long 3-day tourney. Watch for a possible Slattery-Beaulieu match-up. And it'll be interesting to see who each team starts in goal, since both are still figuring that out.

An upset wouldn't shock me since East has done a good job of sticking around with the top teams they've played, but it would definitely be an upset. The Hounds need to prove to me that they can hold down the Hill offense.

Don't know how I forgot that game. I was at the Xcel that night. HM scored 2 in the last minute of the 1st period and 2 more in the 1st minute of the 2nd period. They won 5-3. The last meeting was indeed on 3/11/10 in the State Quarterfinal. It must be that it was overshadowed by that epic 4 OT loss to Tonka the next night.

Howg will get the start in net tomorrow I have learned.

HM is the favorite here obviously, but East pulling off an upset wouldn't surprise me. I would love to see East prove people wrong again for the second year.

If they do pull off the win, it would be a great win to put on the resumè if the seedlings get complicated in 7AA.

I'll take East 3-2 in OT.

My guess is that Wendlandt will be in nets for the Pioneers.

That was a fun game, especially at the end of the 1st when Hill scored two quick ones to tie it and East immediately retook the lead. Hill had whipped East in the Schwan Cup that year, but the Hounds surprised me by jumping out to get the quick lead and controlling play more often than not. But Hill got those goals in bunches and then settled in, and East couldn't quite get another one in. A frustrating game in certain respects, but it was a nice showing by a very young team, with sophomores scoring all three East goals. It was a good preview of what was to come the next two years.

Now, time to see what they have for us this year...

1-1 after 1. Hill controlled the early portion of the period and also had some nice chances in the dying seconds, but East got a garbage goal and had some quality offensive zone time over the second half of the period. Shots were even at 6.

1-1 after the 1st period.

Hill Murray popped in a quick one in within the first couple of minutes, and they seemed to be taking complete control, until DE managed to get a shot in after a huge scramble in front of the net and tied it all up.

East really took control of the play during the last 8 minutes or so of the 1st. They are looking pretty good so far.

 We had pretty much the exact same description, too.

Nice to see Jack Kolar back out on the ice.

Howg now in net for East. Goaltending is a huge problem this year.

Make that 4-2 on a power play goal.

End of 2nd- 4-2 HM.

Don't really know what was going on for Hedin in the early second, but it has really dug a hole for the Hounds. East is putting on some great pressure, I am actually pleased with the way they are playing. We will see what the 3rd brings! Howg has still not faced a shot.

The shot advantage is huge for DE. Don't know the number exactly, but they are getting a lot shots on net.

4 goals on 10 shots tells much of the story here, though Hill's top line is clearly more skilled than anything East has.

East with a number of good chances as the period went along, but they only put in one. The third will be an uphill battle.

Nice pun.

Did East really give up 3 goals on 4 shots in the 2nd?

Yep. Not good for hedin who is in the middle of a competition for the starting job.

Yep. Switched goalies after the 4th goal, and the backup didn't see a single shot in over 10 minutes.

5-2 HM after a sweet bar down goal. Not liking the score, but I'll admit it is fun to watch HM play.
