Question about Shattuck...

Are they not part of the MSHSL? I know they don't play in the Tourney, but was just wondering why this was. I assume it's because of their high playing level and the fact they are boarding.

Because it's called the Minnesota State High School League, NOT the International High School League.

You assume incorrectly. First of all, Edina would most likely beat their prep team 7 times out of ten. Second, the MSHSL has a lot of rules the SSM would not want to abide by because they would conflict with their business model. Simple as that.

SSM does not agree to stay under the MSHSL regular season game limit of 25 (they play 60-70 a year). They also play in the USA Hockey Tier One 18AAA division and its national tournament, and therefore have slightly different player eligiblity criteria

Edina beating them 7 out of 10 maybe a little strong of a statement, if their prep team played in the state tourney they would be a favorite most years but wouldn't be an automatic winner . They are a strong team but it is a little like apples to oranges, I maybe mistaken but i believe their seniors can be older than our seniors

You guys are both clueless Shattuck would win the state tournament every single year if they played in it.

I don't know about clueless, having seen them play against good high school teams for the last 10 years or so they would be a top team maybe a favored team in the state tourney but they wouldn't win every year and they would play some very tough close games

Shattuck would be a favorite most years if they could play under the rules they operate under. If they had to conform to MSHSL rules on eligibility and other areas, they would be just another solid team. They have played against high school years such as Benilde and St. Thomas Academy in recent years and have won some and lost some. They have tried to schedule other MSHSL teams such as Edina and Hill, both of which refuse to play them, feeling that Shattuck shouldn't be able to have it both ways, namely choose not to be a part of the MSHSL but still play against the top high school teams

Agree with all of that. Not one their best teams this year..young on defense (having to move up stars) and changes in USA hockey rules
limiting imports have them scrambling. Still very good...

No. SSM beat Benilde 8-1 this year and went 11-3-1 in the Elite League.
The best HS teams have 3 or 4 wins and a couple of ties against them in about 20 games or so over the last decade.
As has been said, Shattuck doesn't play by MSHSL rules. They are a prep school with Tier 1 Hockey. Apples to Oranges.

Might want to add that most of that record is against programs that didn't make the tournament.

They are part of the MSHSL in other sports, though those are decreasing, just not hockey. They used to play hockey in the MSHSL but decided to go in another direction 20 or so years ago. It must have been a business decision as the MSHSL lists SSM enrollment at 394 and they have 5 hockey teams.

Benilde beat them last year. I don't believe mn publics are allowed to play them.

By a 5-2 score. St. Thomas Academy also beat them, 3-2.

STA beat them last year but they also beat Edina and Hill Murray when they were a lowly Class A team

I played midget AAA hockey and we played Shattuck twice in the year, once just after they had beat Benilde (the year they won state) and I asked a few of their players after shaking hands how they had only beat them 4-2 (it was 5-2 but one was an empty netter) and they all told me none of their players even take the games against high school teams seriously. Their top line didn't play after the first.
I agree that the discussion would be completely changed if Shattuck had to play under MSHSL rules, but they don't. The question asked was how would they do, and the truth of the matter is that they would win it every single year except the years where there is a truly unique team (Jefferson '93) (Centennial '04) etc. Shattuck consistently has at least half of their team play at the Division 1 or Major Junior level and there's no way a single city is going to produce those kind of numbers

It would be nice if the high school league would let them play in the tournament and then send the tournament winner to the USA hockey national championships for midget aaa but that might expose how overrated high school hockey is

Dead wrong: the top 5-10 teams here would do great in the AAA tourney. They have beaten Shattuck in years when they have won the national title.

first off I think you missed the part about Shattuck not taking those games seriously.
Second I played in both leagues, MN high school and Midget AAA, there was no comparison at all Midget aaa was head and shoulders above

if you think the PREP TEAM not the midget team takes playing Benilde, STA, Breck lightly you're nuts. The midget team would get killed by any quality high school team. the prep team would be HIGHLY compettative against any quality high school team, to say they don't take those games seriously is just crazy maybe STA doesn't take beating their vauted Prep team all that seriously also

that's not my opinion thats a quote from one of their players when we played them, his exact words were "we don't really care about those games"

Midget AAA vs Prep?
They are different levels correct, Prep being better than AAA?

yes Prep is like varsity and the midget aaa team is like the JV.
we played the Prep team once in the regular season and once at nationals

thats a great excuse after getting your ass kicked if you think beating Honey Backed Hams or some isolated "players " comment is the end all great__but I know the many games I have watched the Prep team play against Mn high school teams and the Prep team is a good team but they would be nothing more than a highly competative yeam in our state high school tourney-- i disageed with the poster who said Edina would beat them 7 out of 10 but you don't get beat by STA Benilde and Breck and say you weren't trying-- in the games i saw all their top players were playing if thet were'nt trying that maybe true because they got their asses kicked

they beat benilde 5-2 two days before he made that comment, they didn't get their ass kicked by somebody.
you can think what you want it's pretty clear I'm not going to change your mind. I'm just giving you my opinion after playing 2 years of high school and a year of midget AAA and playing Shattuck. No city in Minnesota can claim to produce as many next level players whether its college or juniors as Shattuck does in one year let alone every year
