In case we needed to stir up a little debate on here, I decided to go through many of the prominent coaches in the state and offer a few comments on them, both positive and constructively negative. Obviously, I have more to say about the ones I see more often, but here's part one (sections 1AA-5AA):

Part 2 will be along in a day or two. Feel free to agree or disagree, but be reasonable about it.

Great job as always Karl. Are you doing A as well, or just AA?

I'm doing some A coaches also, though there won't be as much detail there simply because I don't know them as well (especially on teams outside of sections 7 and

.
They'll be in part two, which will go up tomorrow.

karl(east) wrote:Mike Taylor, Eagan Taylor has been brilliant over the past few seasons, getting a lot out of teams that were supposed to be dropping off in talent. Eagan has never had the youth success of many of the top programs in the state, but the high school teams have been right there over the past five years (though some transfers do help there). He brings a strong but not excessive defensive emphasis, great tactical chops, and a complete team system that has teams looking very fluid...
Mike Taylor was quick to share credit when his assistant coaches when he accepted all of those coaching awards this past season. In particular, it's Mike Thomas (former Richfield coach and Saterdalen's assistant during Jefferson's glory days) that has run the Wildcat defense all these years. Taylor often jokes about needing Thomas's permission to yell at a Wildcat blue liner during a game.

Interesting...I did not know that. I remember Thomas's name coming up in "Blades of Glory" (the book by a writer who spent a year embedded in Saterdalen's Jags locker room), though I'd have to reread it to remember why.
It would be interesting to see which other assistant coaches out there would get a lot of credit. I mentioned Schafhauser and Oliver in this series, and Giles is sure surrounded by some familiar names in MN hockey, as has Pauly. Randolph had Larry Trachsel and Terry Johnson forever, though both have now retired and nearly all of his staff (if not all?) is now former players. Any others who stand out to anyone?

I believe John Bianchi was Saterdalens assistant during the glory years. Thomas may have come over after he left Richfield at the end.

Also, Greg Trebil of Holy Angels fame from the late 90's to mid 2000's. Hell of a coaching staff there at Jefferson during their heyday.

I don't thinkTrebil ever coached at the high scholl level for Jefferson. He was the bantam coach for many years and then left around 94 for Holy Angels.

Correct. He coached A Squirts, A PeeWees, and A Bantams from mid 80's to mid 90's, coached all the guys that the guy who eventually went on the boh HS run from 92-94. I think he went over to AHA when Ryan graduated from Jefferson, or maybe his senior year, which was 96.

Correct, Trebils first season was the same year I started at The Richfield Ice Palace, fall of 96.
