Greenway vs Denfeld, 12/2

Denfeld 5, Greenway 4. This was the most bizarre game I have watched. This is one game where shots on goal do not tell the story. Greenway had an unbelievable amount of penalties. All five Denfeld goals were power play goals. In the second period, Greenway had a 5 minute major, Denfeld had a 5 on 3 for an entire 2 minutes, and then had power plays for another 6 minutes. In the third period Greenway got another major penalty. Greenway was down 5-2 but scored two goals (even strength) to close the gap, but couldn't get another. A huge brawl occurred at the end of the game. Based on this game Denfeld is not going to challenge Hermantown and Marshall. Greenway's all sophomore first line is going to do some damage this year.

Denfeld also took a thumping from Jefferson, a solid AA club, but not a top ten team. I'd be concerned if I were a Denfeld fan. I agree this game is not the best measure of Denfeld, but Greenway led 2-0 after one period when the teams were mostly at full-strength. Shots on goal were 9-7 Denfeld. It wasn't until Greenway took all those penalties that they were badly outplayed. Shots were 20-2 Denfeld in the second. After Greenway got back to full-strength in the third period (the second major really put them in a hole) Greenway scored two goals and Denfeld scored none. I'm sure Denfeld was looking past Greenway and can play better, but I guess we'll see if they can compete when they play Hermantown. Also, it will be interesting to see what the Greenway coaches do about the undisciplined play by Greenway. The same player took both major penalties and I thought was the instigator of the brawl.

2 majors in a game is a game dq. That player should not have been around to start a brawl

Maybe I'm mistaken. I'll look into it. One major was for checking from behind the second was for targeting the head.

Saw them play in the preseason scrimmages and have to confess to telling the guy next to me that anger management was going to be a major issue for the coaching staff this year. I think that Denfeld could (based on talent) give either Hermantown or Duluth Marshall a game this year in the play offs but they are going to have to stay focused to do it.

The Greenway coach has received a two game suspension and so has the player that committed the two majors. The Greenway player allegedly made a racial remark to a Denfeld player who is black.

My thoughts from being at the game: Greenway is improving but really needs to stay out of the box. They took a ton of penalties and played very chippy throughout the game and after which started a big brawl. Each team lost 5 players and their coach for the next game including some of the better players for each team.
Denfeld looked sluggish early before awakening in the second period and absolutely dominating, as they should have been. I think the shots ended up being about 45-15. All in all I can agree that Denfeld needs to be better to give Hermantown and Marshall a tough fight, but it seems like they always struggle with these kinds of teams then turn it on vs their rivals. We will see!

They were only dominating in the second period because they were on the power play for approximately 12 minutes of the period including a 5 on 3 for two minutes. When teams were at even strength Denfeld was not dominating.
The whole game is an embarrassment to Greenway. The Denfeld coach made the mistake of not keeping his players on the bench when the initial fight broke out.

How so?

The chippy play, cheap shots (2 majors), racial slur and instigating the brawl at the end of the game. This team has a chance of being dangerous at sectionals if they clean up their act. If they continue to take penalties they will be bounced in the first round. The talent is there and so is the depth. It will be very interesting to see how they perform and react after the suspensions have been served.

Official suspensions: Coach Lawson 4 games - He was on "probation" for a previous action. Five (I think) players were suspended for 1 game. The only unknown is the suspension for the player who committed the majors and started the brawl. I've heard two games and heard one game. Have a feeling Greenway will be looking for a new coach.

So did the refs make a mistake by not ejecting the player after his 2nd major? Any 2 majors by same player in same game is a game disqualification and would carry a 1 game suspension for 1st offense.

I'm still trying to figure that out. Both were 5 minute major penalties. Denfeld scored two goals on the second one. I thought it was an automatic disqualification for a major penalty. Can someone explain if there are any circumstances that allow a player to return? The coach should have sent him to the locker room anyway. Especially after the second one.

No circumstances. Player should have been sent to showers after 2nd major, if he did indeed get 2 majors.
