Who knows what the MSHSL will be thinking when realignment takes place, but geographically here's a possibility. Don't know how enrollments are going to change so just based this on this year data. The * means a new section assignment for the team.

Another unknown is what is going to happen in Duluth. The school board is concerned about the disparity in enrollment between East (1,472) and Denfeld (863). Could they redraw the lines so East would need to opt up? Lots of possibilities in the Metro though.

Well.........North Metro went away two years ago. PC kids went Osseo and Fridley to Irondale.

Don't see Osseo leaving 5 at all.

The cutoff s for classes should be out to at least the AD's in the next month or so, so any boundary change in Duluth shouldn't effect the next cycle unless Denfeld chooses to opt up. Some schools have done that in the past knowing they were going to be in AA mid cycle, Lakeville South comes to mind.

New Ulm, LeSeuer, and Minneapolis petitioned down after being assigned to AA sections, 2AA I believe.

Rochester Century opted up this cycle, they have 38 kids out, 18 are seniors and roughly 10 are freshmen or 8th graders. I don't know if they'll have the numbers to opt up again if it comes to that, the same situation led to Austin and Faribault to stop opting up. For that matter now that it is only a two year commitment all opt ups and co-ops will need to be redone.

Does anyone know why MN uses "enrollment" to classify sports instead of simply stating "the X largest schools in the top class, the next X in the next class, etc"?

It's counter intuitive this way and would make providing the information to the public much easier...

Whew, finally got rid of Moorhead! Must be dropping hockey as they are not in any section. Maybe moved to ND??

I think Ive mentioned this in other threads, should consider several realignments to better reflect how the AA geography has changed over the last decade or two.

o Move Cottage Grove, Rosemount and Hastings into SE Section 1
o Move Owat, LVN, LVS and AV into South Central Section 2
o Move Chan, Jeff and Edina into West Metro Section 6
o Move Wayz and Elk to NW Metro Section 5
o Move Centennial and Blaine to North/NE Metro Section 4
o Move Stillwater to East Metro Section 3
o Move Brainerd and add Marshall into Section 7 .
o Move SMA to Section 8

No doubt some further tweaking might be needed.

This makes no sense. Do you put any thought into your post before you start typing?

MSHSL claims they base their assignments solely on geography.

Corrected the Sections. Moved Centennial to Section 5, moved Brainerd to Section 7, and Moorhead to Section 8.

I did a little more fine tuning. Then, took my suggestions and rolled them into a chart like Greenway started. ** denotes changes.

This is based on more natural geographical districts in todays AA world. If a person took a different highliter color for each Section in the state and compared old to new, I dont think would have any more anomalies than today. Or, if took all the team arena distances from each other, or distances to travel to Section playoffs, I dont think would be too much different than today.

In addition to having more natural geography, this would create new fresh rivalries in almost every Section, which I think would be a good thing, even though geography is the primary stated consideration.

Jeez, West Metro! We spend years lamenting the lack of quality teams in Section1, and now you want to move out the schools that have earned it some respectability?

With all due respect (and a little a little humor so don't take it too hard), could you even find your way out of a paper bag.

And we like Section 4 fine the way it is. We don't care to have Centennial back, or Blaine in.

I like some of the stuff you did regarding the metro sections. I like the combos in sections 2,4, and 5. I think that will make them really competitive. 3 has some promise but with some of those schools down right now it looks pretty easy for St. Thomas.
I think 7 looks good too with ER out.
As an Edina fan, I'm not crazy about section six, but it probably makes more sense geographically having them compared to Wayzata.

I think you should switch Apple Valley with Holy angels since it is technically more east and it dosen't make much sense to me to split Eastview and Apple Valley up.
Obviously the big issue here is section 1. Any one of those teams at state would seem like a gimme game.
Maybe the MNSHL can figure out some kind of section thing similar to how football does it with their crossover games for the big schools because no matter how you draw it up, I think that southern section will always be an issue.

Finally Edina would be forced to play some competition to make it to state! I like it
