Brimsek Candidates

There has not been much discussion on the Brimsek Award and I am wondering what people's thoughts are on this year's contenders. What criteria weighs heaviest when narrowing it down to the final two? Is it W/L record, GAA, Sv%, or is it some non-measurable intangible that weighs heaviest in the decision? What about the quality of the team in front of a goalie, and how that factors into his statistics? Can a great goalie on a bad team win the Brimsek?

I took some of the popular candidates and mixed in a few that never get mentioned. To be fair, I only included goalies who have played against multiple top 5 teams as well. I also added a final stat, which is the team's average goals vs their opponents in the event people want to take that into consideration. With no names factoring in, who in this list would merit consideration for the award?

Here are the past 4 Brimsek winners:
W L T SH SV G GAA % SO TGPG
17 8 0 797 732 65 2.64 .918 1 3.61

19 2 2 482 452 30 1.32 .938 0 5.28

18 6 0 670 621 49 2.02 .927 5 4.22

16 6 3 708 671 37 1.48 .948 6 3.6

Here are 7 candidates for this year:
W L T SH SV G GAA % SO TGPG
1. 11 6 2 565 520 45 2.3 .920 0 3.33

2. 12 8 1 601 555 46 2.18 .923 4 3.29

3. 8 10 1 491 444 47 2.44 .904 2 2.90

4. 6 13 0 663 604 59 3.16 .911 3 2.55

5. 11 12 1 700 643 57 2.34 .919 5 2.21

6. 11 2 0 266 244 22 1.6 .917 3 4.00

7. 6 5 2 323 292 31 2.44 .904 0 2.57

Not quite all the way fair. Can you add in the schedule strength please? Even then, stats only tell part of the story, but if you fulfill my request I'll play along with your hypothetical.

If my math is correct one candidate from this years list is giving up 4 goals a game and has a save % of over 90%. That means this tender is facing at least 40 shots a game....... thats a lot of pucks being thrown in his direction...... :)

"6. 11 2 0 266 244 22 1.6 .917 3 4.00"

13 games 22 goals given up would be 1.69.
Must not have played in all 11-2-0 games. 4 GPG @@ goals allowed that would be 5.5 games.
That would be less than 300 minutes. Not in the running with so few minutes.
My criteria at this point of the season would be at a minimum of 500 minutes, perhaps more.

The 4.00. GPG is how many goals the goalie's team scores, per game...the 700 minutes is legit... 13 full games (663 minutes), plus came in, in relief one game...that's why GAA is even 1.6.

In evaluating goalies what is the significance of the number of goals scored by his team?

Based on Elliott's post plus strength of schedule, I'd have to give the edge to Edquist although am sure the Bemidji goalies may be the ones to beat!!!

A goalie is more valuable to his team when the team averages less goals per game. The Brimsek winner from 2 years ago had about a 4 goal margin to work with based on averages on any given night, that's a lot of soft goals or mistakes by a tender in one game and the team will probably still get the win. In comparison: the winner from last year had less than a 1 goal difference on average between his GAA and TGPG. Thus he had no margin for error or it would most likely cost his team the win. [/b]

I noted the team's goals per game to show the level of offensive support in front of those particular goalies. If the best defense is a good offense, a higher total might show better support in front of that player, or bear out the "good goalie on a bad team" angle.

How much of a goalies success is a result of the team in front of him and the quality of shots he is seeing? I think that the combination of shots a goalie sees and the number of goals his team is scoring in front of him are an interesting aspect to consider.

I don't think this is a rant vs Edquist. He's clearly a good goalie that also enjoys his team putting up lots of goals and arguably the best defensive team in the state.

Brimsek = top SENIOR goaltender in the state
Here's how I break down the Sr goaltenders I have seen play:

Dittmer & Kuehmichel - Brimsek finalists

Didn't play Elites but deserve consideration:
Boe (Edina) - would be my 3rd pick - leads AA in SO's
Murray (DM) - single A schedule will hurt
Headrick (Breck) - ditto

Now that the final two candidates have been named are there any opinions on why these two were chosen over the others? Based on statistics alone, they were not the two that would jump out at me. No knock against either one as they are both very good tenders.

Both very good but I would have bet the house on Kuehmichel.
