Even Michigan doesn't believe Detroit is hockeytown

Interesting read and listen on the podcast included at the bottom of the page from a Detroit radio station. Even people from Michigan now realizing they are "Red Wings town", not "Hockeytown".

Seeing this thread reminds me of a related subject I have opined on many times.
I dont know why I cant convince more forum members to talk to their MinnHock and USA Hockey friends to get NTDP moved from Ann Arbor to the State of Hockey where it belongs.
Ann Arbor location was rooted in a 20th century view of the options. Its an insult to have the National Team there instead of Minnesota. Time for a change after 20 years.
Rochester would be perfect. It has $5 bill of infrastructure funds available as part of the Mayo expansion project. Get the new arena built downtown, or near downtown
Every hockey parent in American would feel good about the National Team being in Minnesota.
If their kid made the team, they would feel good about sending their 10th grader to Rochester MN. Just say Minnesota and Mayo clinic , and thats all they need to hear. As compared to worrying their kids will take a wrong exit too close to the Detroit metro.
There wouldnt be any more Minn highschoolers siphoned off than before. In fact, the judging coaches would probably be less likely to err in favor of a Minnesota kid.
Meanwhile, maybe the new excitement in Rochester would help rejumpstart the youth hockey and high school hockey program down there..
I also think NDTP located in Minnesota would further enhance the states image and help draw mobile hockey families from LA, St. Louis, Phoenix, NW Illinois to relocate here so there kids could play high school hockey here. This would help further grow the states young family hockey base, by more than the Minnesotas slow organic growth rate.

A wrong 45 minute exit to Detroit? That's almost like saying a kid in Rochester could take the wrong exit and end up near North MPLS.

Easy enough to mistakenlytake I 94 east instead of West when coming out of Wayne County Airport.
Anyway, kids being kids, the U of M kids will explore The Detroit Metro, my own nephew did it when he was there
Be honest, would you rather send your 10th-grader away to a southern Michigan hockey environment or Minnesota? If you were a mobile hockey family in St. Louis or LA suburbs, would youwant to relocate to Minnesota youth hockey Or southern Michigan youth hockey?

Ann Arbor is a beautiful city and great college town and Detroit is no scarier than Chicago and I wouldn't hesitate to let my kids visit there either. If they are smart and you raised them right there is nothing to worry about any more so than the normal worries any parent has wherever their kids are. I think you are way, way off in your thinking.
Also, didn't we already have this discussion fairly recently and wasn't it pretty universally agreed that Rochester would be a bad move for the USNTDP... I'll try and find that thread if I can
