The MSHSL is looking for officials in all sports, qualifications include being 18 years of age, the ability to interpret and apply rules, poise, courage, and communication skills. The MSHSL reduced its fees for new officials ($15 I think), they send you a rules book every two years and all the information needed to be qualified; a 100 t/f question open book exam, online videos, and meetings, you need to attend one meeting in person every 3 years.

On the MSHSL home page there is a "Become an Official" link, click on it, enter some basic information and the MSHSL will contact you to assist you in the process.

For former athletes officiating is a great way to give back to the sport or sports they enjoyed so much. I can't say for every area in the state but in the southeast we are having trouble replacing officials as they retire or move on, the only way for games to be played is with qualified officials. Hockey, football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, etc. all need help. There is even a new initiative to help, schools provide a better atmosphere for officials and a better mentoring program for new officials.

I've officiated football for nearly 20 years and did hockey for nearly as many, if you have any questions feel free to ask me, your local AD, or the MSHSL. Please consider officiating as a way to keep involved and keep high school athletics running smoothly.
