Is this really any different than "biggest chokes"? I mean, for instance, Osseo over Elk River when Paul Martin was a senior was either a HUGE upset or a HUGE choke, depending on your perspective. As far as state tourney games, Blaine absolutely crushing East 6-0 was a pretty big one in recent memory, though it's more impressive because it was so lopsided when most people, from what I remember, thought East would roll.

here are some upsets i can think of missiaby east beating ifalls in 1994 in the first round of the playoffs. 1996 duluth central beating defending state champs ifalls in the first round 99 eveleth getting knocked out by duluth central and last year hibbing beating a heavily favorited ifalls team that had an all round balanced team not just a one man show

biggest upset

I'd have to say the 1977 state tournament. Rochester John Marshall comes into a tournament a heavy underdog. They beat a powerful Edina team 4-3 in the championship game. 8 of those players go on to play D1 hockey.
Tom Taylors kid was just named WCHA player of the week for the Gophers. # 14, and he's a freshman.
Lecy boys went on to star for Wisconsin,
Jeff Nelson who dove into countless pucks, played at Michigan Tech,
Jeff Teal, Paul Butters and Tom Tayor played for the Gophers
Paul Brandrup went on to star for Michigan.
Doug LeTourneau was on UMD's roster.
I'm probably forgetting somebody, and I appologize, but not a bad HS hockey team, especially coming from SE MN.
They were known as the Ellendale rink rats after an outdoor rink here in Rochester.

The 1982 Section 7 Quarterfinals had perhaps the biggest upset of all time when Int'l Falls beat Hibbing 2 to 1 in Memorial Arena.

Uncle Puckhead, I remember that team. They beat SSP in the semis. Was it really that big of an upset with the amount of talent that was on that team?

By the way, that was a great tournament . Well balanced field and a lot of close games.

Big Upset

Joe,
At the time it was, no team from South of the Twin Cities had ever won the tournament. JM beat SSP 1-0 on a goal by Todd Lecy, I can still see the image of him dancing across the ice after he scored.
Edina was known as the cake eaters, everyone thought they were rich and cocky in those days. Truth of the matter was that they were well coached and disiplined.
Coach Ikola (sp) is a legend in HS hockey.
Burnsville dominated Section 1 for years. JM or Mayo always seemed to be in the section finals and would lose.
This team put hockey on the map in SE Minnesota and Rochester.
Ah yes, those were the days......

UP,
I suppose it was just on the fact that it was a team south of the metro. You didnt need to remind me about Lecys goal nor that bleepin game. Our beloved Packers outplayed em but couldnt put one in. At least thats the way I remember it.

2 years ago when apple valley was 21-0 and looked like one of the best teams in history but got upset by a below .500 lakeville team 4-2, i was at that game

Tartan vs Hill

Last year Tartan vs Hill played twice and the first time they played Tartan upset them 3-2 to beat Hill Murray for the first time in Tartan History and then the second time they played they tied 3-3. After the first loss i herd that lechner skated his kids the hole practice for losing!

Also... the second game when they tied 3-3 it was towards the end of the season and it ended up giving North St Paul the Classic Suburban Conference Title. They won by one point having a record of 14-2-0 and Hill had a record of 13-2-1 in conference play

Richfield-Breck 2002-2003 First Round Sections

I would have to say this was one of the biggest upsets then all the ones you all have named. Breck was heavily favored and Mason Reinhart had the game of his life in net. By far the biggest upset last year that is for sure.

1977 JM

I would also go with the 1977 Rochester JM state title. No southern school had won it before and none have won the big school title since (although JM lost OT final heartbreakers to Edina in 1979 and Jefferson in 1989).

That 1977 team were HUGE underdogs. I have often compared them to the 1980 Olympic team, and I don't think it is too big of a stretch. My memory has the shots in the final at ~45-15 in favor of Edina and that does not count the innumerable blocked shots.

One thing I would correct Uncle P on is that it was the Bloomington Schools that were the roadblock in Section 1 in the 1970's and early 1980's, Burnsville was not the team to beat in that section until the mid 1980's.

Thanks Mitch,
It was Bloomington Jefferson in the section one championships with their huge wave of fans in baby blue at the old Met Center.
Paul Butters was the goalie and he was outstanding to say the least.
Thanks for helping me out, my Alzheimer's is acting up again.

1973 Hibbing

Hibbing comes through the back door of the IRC to knock off IRC and defending state champ I Falls. Falls took it for granted and Hibbing gave them all they wanted. The winning goal was kicked in by a Falls defenseman. Not the first time a team from the old back door won the big tourney. Ahhhhhh to remember when there were jobs north of Duluth.

Edited by: <A HREF=
