Anyone got ideas on who the best players in the state all time might be?? I'm putting my vote in for Roseau's Neil Broten, He has to be in the top 10 atleast. <p></p><i></i>

Mike Crowley has to be in there somewhere. Checco was very, very good at forward, but I don't know about top 10. As for Crowley, there's no question at D. <p></p><i></i>

Of course, Housley is a great choice, but I'm just considering HS achievement here, and I have to believe that Crowley was one of the top 2 or 3 high school defensemen in state history.<br><br>As for forwards, I think you definitely have to give some consideration to both Joey Bianchi and Dave Spehar. Both could completely take over the offensive side of the rink and win a game for their team when asked. <p></p><i></i>

Spehar scored alot yes, but he wasn't great on both ends. if you want just scoreing how about a kid like John Pohl from Red Wing? <p></p><i></i>

Riddle, Martin, Spehar, & Crowley were all great <p></p><i></i>

How about Mark Parrish, he is doing some damage. Langenbrunner also <p></p><i></i>

Broten, Casey, Crowly, and im sure taffe will be pullin out something soon <p></p><i></i>

if you are talking purly on high school i would have to say dave spehar. come on the guy had a hat trick in every single state tournament game. another great one i think is toby peterson from jefferson. instead of playing his senior year of high school hockey he went to colorado college and played college D1. imagine how good he would have been as a high school senior. if you are talking about the greatest player to ever come out of minnesota a guy like neal broten would come to mind. <p></p><i></i>

Defense= Phil Housley, Mike Crowley<br><br>Forward= Dave Spehar (Just as a HS player), Neal Broten, Jamie Langenbrunner, John Mayasich<br><br>Goalie= Karl Goehring or... I don't know his name but I always hear that St. Paul Johnson had a spectacular goalie I think in the 60's. <p></p><i></i>

i dont know who they all are..but you have GOT to include all the minnesotans that were on the 1980 miracle team. regardless of how they stack up to others...they just gotta be on the list.. i mean..miracle is a very strong word..and to think...THAT one word instantly reflects on that team..and their accomplishments.. <p></p><i></i>

Doug Long was the Saint Paul goalie in the 60's, but any list top ten or just top would not be complete without Henry Boucha. He dominated the late 60's of high school hockey but did not have the supporting cast of others. <p></p><i></i>

petey,<br><br>if you are considering high school achievement you couldn't possibly choose crowley over housley. it is obvious that you really didn't see, nor no nothing of what he accomplished in high school. who else in this state, while still in high school played in the canada cup (which is today the world cup)? who else in high school wins a faceoff against gretzky and scores a goal on then Mn north star gilles meloche? housley was light years ahead of crowley in high school, heck he did things in high school that crowley never, ever did anytime in his whole hockey career. we could have cut off housley at age 17 and he still would have done things that crowley could and probably still only dreams of... <p></p><i></i>

I agree with hubbaa on Housley. He was drafted 6th overall based on the skills he showed while in high school. He was playing in the NHL 5 months after graduation from high school. No one can top that.<br><br>I dont understand why everybody puts Broten on the top of their list. His teams didnt win a state championship. He was a great high school player but when these discussions occurr I think he gets the benefit of the fact that he palyed for the Gophers ,USA and then the North Stars. Its kind of like the Kevin McHale effect when the discussion of greatest Gopher B ballers happens.<br><br> <p></p><i></i>

Not sure how you can call Broten over rated but I guess thats up to you. All I know is out of all these players named no one has mentioned any of the Christian bros? You got to put them on any list also I would think. Also how about Ryan Craft from Moorhead? I remember him and Spehar had a great battle down at state. <p></p><i></i>

The list that Angus has put together is impressive. I would add as team manager...ptown because good players , like good teams, aint nothin without the water. <p></p><i></i>

These lists are obviously difficult to put together and someone is always going to be left out. That being said, when speaking of the top, or the best, of all time, I lean towards the players that dominated their era and stood out above all others. Also, I would limit it to high school careers as that is what this forum discusses. Using this criteria, here are a few that are pretty impressive in my eyes:<br><br>Dave Spehar - Most exciting player in MN history. The type of player that anytime he touched the puck, he was a supreme threat and made opponents cringe. Sure, he wasn't the best two-way player, but he did not need to be and he, and his coach, played to his strength during his high school career. He dominated offensively, especially when it mattered most against the best competition. For proof of that, just look at his State Tourney stats. He truly electrified the crowd at the Civic Center and there was never a doubt he was going to bury the penalty shot against Moorhead.<br><br>Phil Housley - Sorry 1321, Housley is the yardstick that all others will be measured by. I would liken him to a Bobby Orr at the high school level. Steady defensively and a threat offensively.<br><br>Henry Boucha - Unbelievable hands and could make the puck do anything he wanted. No doubt he would have been the game breaker had be remained in the epic Hornet/Warrior tilt. Another crowd electrifier who stepped up his superior play in the games that mattered most.<br><br>Mike Antonovich - Considering his small stature, you would think you could have defensed the guy by hitting him. Problem was that you couldn't. His shiftiness and ability to stickhandle was second to none.<br><br>John Mayasich - Probably the most dominant player of any era. Look at the record books.<br><br>I'm sure there are more and more will be mentioned. These five certainly stick out in my mind. <p></p><i></i>

You still need two D to have a pair. Might as well put 'em both out there.<br><br>And, Mike Crowley still has 3 state titles on the wall. That's got to count for something. <p></p><i></i>
