I did see a tweet from the MSHSL that co-ops are being done differently next year - here is the exact quote: "The Rep. Assembly voted today to change how coop enrollments are counted in classification. 100% of the largest school, 50% of the others." Not sure how many co-ops this will have an effect on but guessing a few may move down to class A.

In AA hockey the only co-ops that do not opt up are.....

Dodge County - a 7 school conglomerate
Rochester Century/Stewartville/Schaefer Academy
Irondale/Fridley/Columbia Heights/St Anthony
Osseo/Park Center
Elk River/Zimmerman
Brainerd/Pillager
Armstrong/Cooper
Apollo/Tech

Of those no one will be affected if the co-ops don't change, maybe Dodge County will be close....I haven't done the math. The ones that probably will be affected are the smaller ones like New Ulm and LeSeuer that have been assigned to AA in the past but petitioned down to A.

Marshall had to petition down last time.

I remember seeing that the first day the last ones came out. Definitely an lol moment thinking of them playing AA as it would be with all teams in 3A.

The mshsl had them listed in aa all the way until the season started.

Johnson-Como Park also had to petition before the 2016-17 season to remain A. I don't know the terms of that petition - if it was just for the season, or if it extends through the upcoming realignment.

Inevitably someone will come on here and say there is no such thing as a petition. Happens every time this happens. Can someone clarify this process?

No such thing as a petition.

Those schools that qualify may appeal their placement.

The Process

Class assignments are determined by enrollment.

Schools with at least 50% Free and Reduced Lunch can appeal to the Athletic Director Advisory Committee to drop down 1 class in team sports (400 Series Bylaws -Class Competition D.5.h)

Prior to the release of the enrollment cut-offs, schools who feel they belong in a higher class can "Opt-Up".

Here is a list of the 2015 Opt-ups

Section placement is determined by geography. Our schools have asked us to reduce travel as much as possible.

Geographic Sections should not overlap (as the crow flies).

Sections should be numerically balanced within a class. Within 2 in AA classes, within 4 in Class A.

Competitive Success is NOT a factor

A. Team/Non-lifelong Activities
When Class A schools cooperatively sponsor a team/non-lifelong activity, the total enrollments of each school shall
be combined to determine the appropriate competitive classification.

Hockey (others deleted as not relevant)

I think he meant petition down/appeal down. Same deal.

Here is the procedure for the Class AA exception from the MSHL bylaws as it applies to coops. Larger non-co op schools who wish to play down maybe follow the same procedure?

Class AA Exception Procedure:
Class AA schools who wish to cooperatively sponsor a team activity may appeal to the Board for an exception to
the Cooperative Sponsorship Bylaw on an annual basis. The appeal must include, but shall not be limited to, the
following documentation from each of the applying schools:
1) Identify and document the reasons for the appeal;
2) Provide a summary of what each of the applying schools has done to promote participation in the activity in
their school;
3) Provide a written review and comment regarding the proposed coop from
a) The Competitive Section schools,
b) The Competitive Subsection schools, and
c) The Conference member schools;
4) Document student interest in the activity (grades 7-12) from the most recent Student Interest Survey required
by the Department of Education; and
5) Provide other information as may be deemed necessary by the Board of Director

I don't see any changes coming in 7AA or 7A. That's alright. 7AA is fine just the way it is :)

Is 7AA okay because Elk River never wins and the current assigned AA teams don't want to lose to Hermantown to go to state? :shock:

Duluth East probably next year and then it will be Andover and Cloquet battling it out the next few..

Andover could become a sore spot to the northlanders in a couple..

All depends on who stays and goes.. though
