This should be fun. Lots of nice teams. It’s nice to see a big metro school in the tournament this year.

I am curious about how the organization of the tournament has gone with respect to the teams in it. I believe 3 years ago it was 4 top WI teams and 4 solid MN teams with all of the quarterfinals being MN vs WI. Then two years ago it was down to 2 or 3 WI teams, none last year, and now it's all AA schools plus Hermantown, which should make for a solid tournament.

Matching up 8AA rivals Bemidji and Brainerd in the first round feels like a missed opportunity. They already play during the regular season, and splitting them up would have made for better bracket balance. Poor Roseville and Anoka are going to take a beating in this tournament.

Ummm, because friends stick together and nobody wants to lose their home tourney (gate fees $$$).

Marshall's Flaherty said Bemidji and Brainerd requested to play each other in the first round, as did CEC and Wayzata. So he honored those requests.

Wayzata and CEC score surprised me a bit. I didn't think Wayzata was that good this year; although maybe it was CEC that didn't play well?
I wasn't at the game this afternoon so I don't know.

I would assume a lot of it has to do with Marshall moving to AA, which gives them a reason to want to play a lot of good AA teams and also may help them draw AA opponents to the tournament that they host.

I didn't watch this game, but having seen both of them against a common opponent, I'm not wildly surprised. Wayzata is certainly deeper, and plays a solid defensive style. They often do some head-scratching things in December (for example, the Blake loss) but outside of that have been pretty solid. And Cloquet has been all over the place with its results so far, too.

All over the place as in? An loss to WBL, Stillwater, and Superior Wi, and Wayzata. I’d think that with an entirely new coaching staff....their record would be worse at this point in the season. CEC does have much work to do though.

CEC has been the biggest disapointment at this point. All the preseason hype seems to be unfounded. They always seem to get beat by any half way decent City team. Their win over Moorhead is not impressive considering how badly they were outplayed. They always play East tough because of the rivalry. A bad loss to Superior doesn't help. No way an Esse coached team with this supposed talent would lose to Superior. I'd put them at a 4 or 5 seed.

I agree CEC all over the place; but isn't that a typical Smalley coached team? Try to run and gun, poor D zone play, no consistency.

Greenwayraider- not sure on biggest disappointment, BUT as stated above, they have been all over the place. I won't agree or disagree with you on the Esse team would lose to Superior; he had many good teams that would under perform at times too.
Your goalie looks pretty solid!

Came back and scored a bunch against 2 good teams! Smalls has them on track!

Two good teams? Roseville hasn’t won a game yet and Anoka has won two games. Those two wins against weak teams don’t give me reason to change my opinion.

I agree. I don't tweet but will load Doug's retweets on followthepuck to get scores. The problem there is that either it is a score only or a biased sentence or two sent by a parent or a highly sanitzed post. (I love the Redwood tweets but geez you had a well deserved shot to take and didn't) I miss the emotion and recaps given here.
I also think rankings have been thrown off by the lack of detailed information we usedto get from cites like this and newsmedia. #fakenews runs rampant
Basing rankings nearly soley on results against Duluth East........

Three out of the four goals for Hermanfraud scored by transfers? That's been their formula for years. You guys are really doing a great job in that A tourney, everyone is very proud!

Gracious in victory as always, Peky. Marshall had the stones to opt up to AA, and they are probably the 2nd best team in 7AA this year, yet your team continues to take the path of least resistance.
99% of HS hockey fans are annoyed/disgusted/bored with Hermantown collecting trophies in A. Being a sore winner is not going to reduce that number.
Congrats to Marshall on building a solid AA team.

Is there any truth to Duluth Marshall building dorms on campus. All their usual recruits going to Hermantown an East. I personally think they don’t have much future without dorms. They could then recruit hockey players from across the country.
And everybody knows that Hermantown hockey attracts talent at every level from across the 218. I wish CEC had this problem
